Something's been bothering me about the fencing photograph. See the girl leaning again the balustrade...where's her head?

-also, one of the team members looks like a man in a wig. (at the end, on the left...near the headless girl)

USC has quite a few pictures of Exposition Park from the '30s. Here's a couple that show the balustrade. I'm still trying to work out which building is peeking through the trees behind the fencing team. It may be the end of the building in the second picture below.

I was also confused by the apparently headless girl, but it's an optical illusion. Look where her knees are - they give a good indicator of her height. She actually has at least one of her forearms on her forehead, most likely shielding her eyes from the sun.

I like how you can see inside this room in the first photo.

It's a bit eerie, in a voyeuristic kind of way. (my noirish imagination wants to see a dead body on that floor)

I feel the same way! Which is why I had to post full size instead of linking. I love zooming in on individuals, looking through windows, etc. I've got a bunch more, but I don't want to make the page impossible to load for those with slower interwebs.

Although it's been posted before, here's sopas ej's thread about the 1932 Olympics: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=171850 The fencing was held in the Armory in Exposition Park, better known these days as The Jeffersonian on Bones. The original brick wall is still there, even if it is in need of quite a bit of repair. Here's a photo I took of it in December...

Hoss, I happened to have some info about that. Birch-Smith Furniture Co. (they started as Lyon, McKinney & Smith c. 1902 and reorganized as B-S in 1921) merged, in 1933 along with Goodan-Jenkins and the Los Angeles Furniture Co. into the Los Angeles Furniture Co. but Birch-Smith continued to run its storage co. seperately (So Cal Music Co. became the new tenant of their building at 737-741 Hill).

This photo is amazing! I'm so glad you posted it. I looked everywhere for a picture of the old Express building when Coffee Dan's was in there, in the basement, but had no luck. It was one of those places, like in the movie Topper, where you went down a slide to get in.
