4,000 new hotel rooms on the way to Austin area

The Austin area is in line for more than a dozen hotels in the next two to three years, potentially putting an end to a shortage of rooms that tourism officials say has kept the city from landing many lucrative conventions in recent years.

Combined, the hotels could make 4,000 or more additional rooms available for out-of-towners, also easing space crunches that occur during the Austin City Limits Music Festival, South by Southwest, Formula 1 events and University of Texas football games.

The city currently has about 30,000 rooms, according to figures from the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau, while nearby San Antonio, a longtime favorite of event planners, has an estimated 40,000 rooms.

Yea, and today the Statesman also reported that Trader Joe's @ Seaholm will open in 2014..............................................................

We mostly know more than they do about developments.

Most likely they are pulling their info from the emerging projects report which is less than up to date.

Excited to be coming back to Austin in June. Looks like a lot of change has happened in the few months I've been gone.

7th and Lamar

That small retail development with a huge parking garage above it on the east side of Lamar just south of REI and Book People broke ground today. It's just north of the
Nokonah.

What? Where? How can something be both north of the Nokonah and south of REI and Book People? (Unless it covered the whole area, that is.)

I think WestAustinite was talking about the vacant lot right next to the Nokonah by Lamar.

Crane base is set at "The Catherine" - formerly Streetlights at Barton Springs. They should be getting the crane up this weekend.

Yeah! ...Seaholm commencing immediately.

AND... 30 story apartment tower announced - to be delivered by mid 2015 - that would mean starting this year.

one tenant will take up most of the power plant the way I read it. The low rise will be trader joes plus other retail and biz... at least they have the anchor tenants to go.

I really hope this project turns out better than I am thinking. A project of this size and complexity...and only valued at approximately "$100MM" scares me a bit. I have a difficult time thinking the project will end up looking anything similar to the renderings SWSG is trying to pawn on the public. I hope I am wrong!

On another note, I am very happy to see the tower's height being increased to 30 stories. Based on the renderings (architectural features in the renderings), I would guess the total height to be in the neighborhood of 350' to 380'. Nice!

Gables, Seaholm, 3eleven, and the library will all be under construction in that area soon. All that's left is GreenWater! (And the energy control buildings, but we're not counting those yet.) Here's to hoping we hear some good news about that soon!

That will be a pretty loud neighborhood for the next few years, with all of that construction going on. But it sure is going to be fun to watch. That area of downtown is finally coming together. 2013 is turning out to be a great year for Austin after all. These projects will have a big effect on the skyline. The library will be short, the Seaholm tower will be medium-sized, and then 3eleven will be tall. So, it will be graduated. I think it will look amazing. I wish someone would create a 3D model of all these buildings.

Such amazing news. Finally, the Seaholm district is taking shape. It will truly be downtown's best hood.

You can include Block 51 in that general area as well. Whole Foods and 7 Rio too.
