You hit it right on. That location would be amazing. Not only would it be a killer spot; it would put some much needed life into one of the main entrances of the city.

I really like the bridge, however it looks like the hairpin will remain at the top of the hill. If the city is upgrading the bridge, why not eliminate the hairpin at QE Park Dr & Saskatchwan Dr to allow 3 lanes of traffic from Gateway to have direct access to the bridge?

This is the major connection between the Edmonton International Aiport and downtown.

^ I believe the project was separated into two parts (the bridge and hairpin) as they wanted to construct the bridge asap whereas the hairpin will be a bone of contention for some area residents (and would have delayed the bridge construction).

The bridge will start as they "negotiate" with area residents about the hairpin, or lack there of in the future.

This bridge looks awesome....now take something like the "Forks" in Winnipeg and plunk it down along the river and our city just took a massive / wow / step forward.
People love the water....what is it about that the planners don't get.

The new Walterdale is going to be a great addition... I hope it gets some lighting treatment..... we will be able to see it out the living room window (at least until that Abbey Lane tower gets built, but by that time we shouldn't have that place anymore)

Also like the curved walkway.

There are a number of restrictions regarding building adjacent to the river. One regarding the 100 year flood plain. One thing the RED-Assiniboine do not have is the dramatic rise and fall of the river the NS gets. With the Hydro dams as well as the Large Basin the NS can rise a meter or more in an hour. I would love an enhanced version of the Forks and the power plant site would be wonderful. I vote for a pub in the old pump house.

Not only that, there's the BANANA stance of river valley protectionistas.

Work started today clearing trees for access roads.

Also, I missed this when it came out but a short clip of a way to incorporate light...

It's gonna be a neat view of construction ( and the completed bridge) from the river boat as its turn around point is just downstream from it

Would be cool if the lighting could work like a grocery store freezer motion detection lighting system. As cars drive down the bridge, the lights glow as they approach and dissipate as they pass.

Would be crazy for distraction though

Berm Construction Begins for Walterdale Bridge

January 22, 2013

Construction has begun on river berms for the new Walterdale Bridge and will continue until late March 2013. The berms—small work platforms on the north and south edges of the river—are necessary for bridge construction to begin this spring.

Berm construction will not affect vehicle traffic across the Walterdale Bridge, however, to ensure their safety, pedestrians and cyclists using nearby trails are cautioned to follow detour signs. An updated trail detour map is available.

In early January 2013, the City cleared trees on both sides of the river and closed trails near the current Walterdale Bridge to accommodate access roads needed for berm construction

Good Afternoon!

The City of Edmonton is having a public meeting regarding the Walterdale Bridge replacement. It will be an opportunity to learn about the final detailed design for the bridge, anticipated construction timelines and construction detours. This public meeting will be a drop-in event with no formal presentations. There will be display materials and project team members available for one-on-one discussions. Please see attached postcard for more information.

Be Informed.

Can't wait to see this bridge come to life.

This, with a lit up HLB, will definitely enhance the city's visual image

How about running some LED's down the side of Gretzky bridge as well ? This bridge is pretty visible from many places, and would make it stand out at night too

Based on the aforementioned picture it looks like they got rid of the bowed walkway from the design? That was a great feature...
