That’s actually better than I expected, I always thought this was going to be some stucco monster.

Avast ye Matey! by Pulkvedis Pods, on Flickr

Yeah, it looks like those port holes could hold some cannons in them. The Crimson Permanent Assurance sails again!

If there's a large chain connected to a buried anchor, we'll know.

I love Python. Love love love them. Glad to see another admirer here.

The tenants need to be provided with large filing cabinets.

It’s projects like this that i enjoy watching. Sure, it’s slow but that’s ok. It is moving along and it’s employing a crew of people and that’s fine. I feel some people have unreasonable expectations for completion. That being said, I find the closure of Catherine street most interesting as it shows just how overbuilt our streets are. It’s not a very busy street to begin with and would serve automobile traffic just fine as a single south bound lane with parking on the west side and a two-way cycle track on the east side running from Cannon to the south side of the train track approaching Augusta. It would connect Cannon to Hunter and connect Corktown to the Core.

I like the way you think about Catherine St as an alternate cycling route!

Frequently in summer, I use Catharine St coming back from the North End as a change of pace versus Ferguson after the train tracks/correctional facility. It's too bad the surface is awful from Barton down to the International Village. Usually use this route to Hunter and then across to Stinson/home.

Not to get too far off topic here so as to not confuse people, but I'd prefer bicycle lanes on John St. I lived on John for years and it's is overbuilt, and is already well used by bicycles because it connects with the John St bicycle lanes north of CN rails. It also connects better with the Hamilton Go Centre, and could be continued south of hunter to at least Augusta since this is a popular bicycled to street.

Mr. Viking - You have to find camaraderie where you can these days. There was a bunch of us in high school and college that got cheap thrills from watching MP. We must be of similar age, I imagine.
As for this development, it is starting to grow on me, since it will add to the life on the public square.
Just took a walk around Maple Lane Annex (Ancaster), and saw the atrocity being built on the site of a school that was torn down some years ago. Deeee-humanizing!

I do like John st North of the tracks as a cycling route but John from Cannon south through the core and up to St Joe’s is just harsh. I won’t use it. Regardless, these lofts are interesting looking even if it’s a bit odd.

I was far too young when the Flying Circus hit North America, watching it in the 1970s while still in elementary school... grades 4, 5, 6. Maybe earlier. I hadn't yet hit high school when the Meaning of Life came out, and I couldn't have made it into a theatre, but I'm positive I saw it before starting grade 9.

To anyone who knows my sense of humour, that's all very explanatory.

Regarding this development, there are MANY buildings along the LRT corridor that could handle this kind of renovation/expansion. I hope we see more like it, rather than a plethora of new structures on the footprints of demolished old ones.

Well, as has been discussed elsewhere, you want to build something into our urban fabric that won't induce a Mr. Creosote response after a thin mint. And there is som much of Main Street that I would love to have torn down. And rebuilt with quality streetscape.

I will withhold judgement until this one is complete, I'm just not sure how I feel about it at the moment. I'm more interested in how this one meets King Street though. What are the plans for the ground level on King & Catherine? I forget how it will look and if there will be commercial included?

That light paneling doesn't work for me. I wish they'd gone darker, or at least varied the colour a bit. I do like the overall concept though.

The problem with the light paneling is it makes the original yellow parts of the heritage piece look old and tired. The original render had ivory coloured panels which would have matched this - of course they may still paint them after but who knows.

Here is what this area originally looked like:

vs now..

smh.. the things they were allowed to do to these buildings.. the building on the left has lost most of its regality and the post sign at the top.. along with most of its facade..

We're lucky many of these are still standing. Had the 1960s-70s mentality gone farther east in a big way, structures along King might have been knocked down from James to Wellington. As it is we lost a lot due to fire and redevelopment (e.g., Effort Square nee Terminal Towers, HSBC, One James S. that replaced Birks, others)

Can anyone remember what was on the south side of King next to Denningers, prior to the Terraces?... and next to that, where the Salvation Army Thrift Store is?
