It probably wouldn't fly for that reason.

Dommage.
Even though I'm firmly a 'soccer' guy and have little to no interest in hockey, I definitely appreciate a bit of the Stomper.

For interest in the World Cup, I think a summertime tournament would benefit the game in Canada as there could be tie ins with outdoor games, outdoor viewing parties, the Tim Bits leagues are in full force in the summer etc. But no, we have the tournament in November/December in a location with little to no home based history of the game in a location that has a terrible human rights record and many people have perished to build a number of stadiums that far outweigh the population that would ever use them.

Think of the confusion and outrage when one got to: "The good old soccer game, it's the best game you can name..."

Blake does the Whitecaps TV broadcasts and used to be on TSN radio. Oh man I hope so!

Also Langley BC will be home to a new CPL franchise and a new SSS.

If given the chance Vancouver would fill BC Place for a men's national team game as well. They have a history of supporting the team before they ever got good or popular.
And with real grass BC Place should become the National soccer stadium.

I didn't realize it was FIFA's decision on who the host city's were. Wonder if this leaves Edmonton out in the cold?

Just want to say I wasn't disagreeing with you personally about what was in your previous post. And there is no doubt any of the three host cities would sell out Canada games and likely the others as well.

The title of National Soccer stadium really doesn't mean much. That was once bestowed on Edmonton (and now BMO) and the conditions for that (the last I heard) were basically hosting one game a year. Also because of travel Vancouver could never be the long time host of the Nats with so many of the players from Ontario and now based in Europe.

I doubt you will see turf in BC Place for longer than a year. And in BC Place the installation issues will be more difficult than if you installed turf at Commonwealth. Getting grass to grow indoors is not easy. I would think there would also be HVAC/mold issues to contend with as well. Add in higher maintenance costs than artificial turf and I'd say it would be one and done. You never know, with two teams Lions and Caps they might give it a go but then you have trade shows etc, that's a real beating for turf to take

My issue is, there seems to be some veiled anti Edmonton narrative out there for no valid reason.

It's not so much that I dislike Edmonton, but since Vancouver is in there, I would like to see us get a split of the 10 games with Toronto.

Ya Edmonton got their Iceteca game in qualifying and we got nothing.

That was more about sticking it to the other team than a slight against Vancouver.

Call me crazy, but I feel the split should be Vancouver and Toronto with 4 each, and 2 in Edmonton.

The games will sell out anywhere and the fans will be obnoxious.

BC Place looks the best out of the three and aerial coverage of Vancouver always kick ass.

Super happy for the guy. He's played excellent for CMNT and I expect this is the first of many over in Europe.

Good to see Richie Laryea finally starting to get some time at Nottingham Forest and getting good reviews in their promotion push to the Premiership.

CanMNT to play friendly vs. Iran, June 5 at Vancouver’s BC Place
Charlie O’Connor-Clarke, Digital Content Editor CanMNT canpl.ca May 12 2022

Canada Soccer announced on Thursday morning that, as part of preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the men’s national team will be playing an international friendly match against Iran on Sunday, June 5 at Vancouver’s BC Place Stadium, kicking off at 4 pm PT (7 pm ET).

The match will be part of a three-game international window for Canada, coming just a few days before the two Concacaf Nations League group stage matches on June 9 against Curaçao (also at BC Place) and on June 13 against Honduras (away in San Pedro Sula).

Iran currently sit 21st in the FIFA World Rankings (making them the highest-ranked team in the Asian Football Confederation), while the Canadians were most recently ranked 38th after the last World Cup Qualifying window. The Iranians, led by Croatian head coach Dragan Skočić, were recently drawn into Group B for the upcoming World Cup, where they’ll take on another Concacaf side in the United States as well as England and the winner of the UEFA qualification playoff. Canada, of course, are in Group F alongside Belgium, Croatia, and Morocco.

The Canadian men’s national team has played Iran three times in its history, most recently a 1-0 win in Egypt back in 2001. Canada also lost 1-0 to Iran in 1997 and 1999, in Toronto and Edmonton respectively.

Ticketing details for this friendly against Iran and the following Nations League match against Curaçao are available at Canada Soccer’s website

Carlo Ancelotti (born 10 June 1959) is an Italian professional football manager and former player who is the manager of La Liga club Real Madrid. He is regarded as one of the greatest and most successful managers in history, and is the joint-top UEFA club winning manager.

Ancelotti is one of only three managers to have won the UEFA Champions League three times (twice with AC Milan and once with Real Madrid), and the first and only one to have managed teams in five finals. He has won the FIFA Club World Cup twice, managing Milan and Real Madrid. Ancelotti is also one of seven people to have won the European Cup or Champions League as both a player and a manager.

As a manager, he has worked for Reggiana, Parma, Juventus, Milan, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Napoli, and Everton, and has won domestic titles in Italy, England, France, Spain, and Germany, becoming the first manager to have won league titles in Europe's top five leagues in 2022, after winning La Liga during his second spell with Real Madrid.
