No More Gray

I am with you about Minnesota Place and its interesting interplay of glass and metal panels. But hasn't Portland endured this proliferation of charcoal gray building exteriors long enough? It began more than a decade ago, and what was once a trend now seems like an obsession. During Portland's long gray winters, wouldn't lighter and brighter building facades be more welcome?

A couple weeks ago, an architect friend came for a visit. He commented to me that his impression of Portland is that it's a city of gray buildings. Now THAT is not a good impression.

Thank you! Was just wondering how the Minnesota Place project was going. It’s amazing how much has been built in the Interstate Corridor in the past 10 years or so. Can’t think another part of town that has had this much new construction outside of NW.

I saw this public notice for demolition of the historic Pacific Power substation building near NE Williams and Knott. Per the notice it sounds like they need to expand the current (exterior) substation and also have issues with squatters and vandalism. Nice old building, but not sure what could be done with it given its intended use.

This one wasn't on my radar. Demolition has started at 32 N Russell street for the Russell Street Apartments, across the street from the planned Williams and Russell project.

Per Portland Maps: "RUSSELL ST APTS - New 7 story, 154-unit mixed-use building with ground floor resident support services, resident lobby with mailboxes, bicycle storage rooms, property management offices, two active-use warm-shell spaces, and building system support spaces; includes associated site work."

Construction has started on the 75-unit affordable Strong Family Apartments at N Williams and N Alberta.

Another 11-unit building going up across the street.

There's actually 3 buildings going up at that site. An 11-unit (Building A), another 11-unit (Building B), and a 13-unit (Building C), totaling 35 low-rise units. Not bad for that site

I drove past this construction recently. So much bigger than I assumed based on what was that old empty lot. They must have taken down that existing building to the west of Williams as well.

Has there been any movement in this situation? Drove by last week, just had me curious. Pushing a year of work stoppage.

Yes, they started back up 2-3 months ago. Exteriors are mostly done. Not sure on the status of the legal questions.
