Yeah, this method is so much quicker and less disruptive. Do you know if the WWII garage is just part of that lot? I had originally thought it would take up the whole thing...unless they plan on building something else on the other side.

I think that Emeril's restaurant will be a nice addition to the streetscape. I'm glad they preserved the facades in that project. One corners of the WWII garage lot also has some preserved facades, so maybe something similar will go up there?

The garage with street level retail is half the lot. part of it is planned to connect to a hotel specifically built for the museum. That building is planned to be around 10-14 stories if I remember correctly.

1031 Canal

I noticed them taking away the concrete barricades surrounding the property at 1031 Canal, and there's a bulldozer on sight. Perhaps construction is about to start?

Who knows but hopefully. I do know the building next to the property was partly collapsing so Im not sure how long that is taking to address and Im sure there is a lawsuit involved there.That said now that this end of rampart and canal is finishing up with major part of streetcar construction I could see it being easier to build now.

The Standard

Have we heard any updates on when the standard will begin construction? I know that when it was announced earlier this summer they mentioned the beginning of 2016.

yeah thats what I heard. Im sure they will start once The Beacon wraps up which will be beginning of 2016.

That said if I were Domain Companies I would try and shut down the Lake direction traffic on Girod. Its a very minimally used street and if they were able to incorporate it into their project they could seriously widen their sidewalks to do something much closer to fulton Street. I think the current sidewalks are still to narrow.

What they should do is starting the construction before the Beacon is finished. Who would want to move into a new apartment with a pile driver going every morning next door?

Honestly it seems like that's how they have been scheduling it. Finish the next buildings piling before the previous one opens. Given these timeframes Id expect to see plans given to the city in the next month or two. Also, once they start the standard don't be surprised to see part of the long lot along Loyola become a staging ground for construction.

City Celebrates Opening of New Rosenwald Center in the B.W. Cooper Neighborhood

OCTOBER 20, 2015
NEW ORLEANS – Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu, City and State officials and FEMA celebrated the opening of the new $8.5 million Rosenwald Center at 1120 South Broad Street in the B.W. Cooper neighborhood. This New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC) recreation center replaces the previous facility that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Construction on the $1.8 million outdoor Rosenwald Pool and Pool House will begin next month and open next summer.

The Rosenwald Center is the third new NORDC recreation center to open this year. Over the summer, the City and NORDC celebrated the openings of the Sanchez Center at 1616 Caffin Street in the Lower Ninth Ward and the Stallings St. Claude Center at 4300 St. Claude Avenue in the Bywater.

“Today, we celebrate another sign of renewal and reinvestment with the reopening of the Rosenwald Center in the B.W. Cooper neighborhood,” Mayor Mitch Landrieu said. “Once again, our young people have a safe place to grow, learn and play and I encourage New Orleanians of all ages to take advantage of it and all the valuable resources it will offer. Ten years ago, Hurricane Katrina brought New Orleans to its knees but today we are standing taller than ever. This project is a symbol that we are building back better than before.”

Since Mayor Landrieu took office in 2010, the City has invested over $157 million in new and improved NORDC facilities and nearly tripled its programming budget. In 2010, about 500 young people learned to swim at eight NORDC pools but this year nearly 4,000 learned at fifteen pools. Also in 2010, only 1,600 children participated in four NORDC summer camps but as of this summer, 5,100 children participated at 49 youth and teen camps across New Orleans. In 2010, New Orleans only had four NORDC recreation centers open to the public. Today, there are ten.

New Orleans public transit update: 5 projects




Transdev and the RTA have sent an army of engineers to the foot of Canal Street to find a way to untangle one of New Orleans more knotted intersections. Augustine didn't go into too much detail Monday, but he said plans could include a streetcar spur headed upriver and a traffic circle to alleviate some of the confusion where Convention Center Boulevard runs into Canal Street.

The redo of that intersection, however, will likely rely on federal government financing, Augustine said. Transdev is waiting to hear the results of its latest application to the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grant program.



5. Downtown transit center

After collecting public comments, complaints and questions for months, a consultant to the RTA is expected to recommend its best choice for a new downtown transit center that would shelter commuters as they wait for buses and streetcars.

Augustine said he expects the consultant will make its recommendation to the RTA board in December.

The engineering firm Parsons Brinkerhoff presented four possible sites in July:

on Basin Street near Canal Street;
on Rampart Street upriver from Canal Street;
Duncan Plaza across from City Hall near Perdido Street and Loyola Avenue; and
the Canal Street neutral ground between Rampart and Dauphine Street.
Once the necessary agencies approves a site, an environmental assessment would be the next step toward applying for federal grants to pay for the center. Transdev has said it would like to build it before the city's tricentennial in 2018.

Second facility dedicated to serving New Orleans’ seniors to open this year


NEW ORLEANS – Today, Mayor Landrieu, City officials and FEMA celebrated the opening of the new $3.4 million Carrollton Hollygrove Senior Center facility at 3300 Hamilton Street. The new senior center is the second facility dedicated to serving New Orleans’ seniors to open this year, following the opening this summer of the Lower Ninth Ward Senior Center in the new Sanchez Center in the Lower Ninth Ward.

“The new multi-purpose Carrollton Hollygrove Senior Center is open to the public and will once again serve as an important anchor to this neighborhood,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. “Our seniors deserve a top notch facility. Together with the New Orleans Council on Aging and FEMA, we have delivered on that promise to provide quality activities and important resources for our seniors. As one of my administration’s committed capital projects, this is another example that we’re building a stronger, more resilient New Orleans that meets our community’s needs.”

Btw if anyone is wondering what's replacing that two story building that's been demolished close to end of veterans by Orleans parish line . It's going to be a retail building and a raising canes .

While I'm always excited to see any sort of development, I'm very excited to see a sudden uptick in office/medical related projects such as this one. A healthy city needs a good mix of all uses.

I think it goes to show that there is some value in all of these new restaurants and entertainment venues/bars, etc. We're definitely seeing more residential in business districts and more offices in traditionally residential areas.

Agreed the days of the office district that empties out after 5 and on weekends is over.

The former George O. Mondy, Jr. School in New Orleans’ historic Treme will be transformed to an elderly living campus. Plans call for the addition of a new building adjacent to the Romanesque Revival style school building dating back to the turn of the 19th century. The buildings total 60,000 SF and will house 35 apartments designed for the elderly. The Mondy conversion is expected to be finished at the end of 2016.

The first phase of the Tolmas Retail Development on a 2.5 acre site along Veterans Boulveard is anchored by a new Trader Joe’s grocery store. The 15,000 sf building consists of a steel framed shell space with specialty electrical and mechanical systems built specifically for Trader Joe’s. The exterior will be a stucco façade with metal panel cladding in the front facing Veterans Boulevard. Construction is scheduled to be complete in six months by March 2016.













A new construction building at 1581 Magazine Street in the Lower Garden District of New Orleans marks the third project that Felicity Property Company has negotiated with Palmisano Contractors. Following successful collaborations on the apartments at 516 Natchez and The Saint Anna, the Owner chose to work with Palmisano again. Architect Wayne Troyer of Studio WTA designed the three story building of 36 one- and two-bedroom rental residences. The ground level will feature two retail storefronts, a residence lounge, and residence parking behind. The sleek modern exterior is composed of an array of materials including Kolumba brick, stucco, aluminum storefront, Hardieplank lap siding, and glass curtainwall. Construction will begin in the fall of 2015 and is expected to be complete in 12 months near the end of 2016.









The former Quality Inn and Suites at 210 O’Keefe Avenue in New Orleans’ Central Business District will be converted to a Moxy, a new concept by Marriott lifestyle brands. The Moxy philosophy aims to millennial travelers, offering high tech lounges, a grab-and-go food kiosk and self service kitchen, and efficiently sized rooms with an affordable pricetag. The first and currently only Moxy hotel opened in Milan, Italy in 2014. The Moxy brand makes its United States debut in early 2016 with the New Orleans location, among others planned in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, and Seattle. The project is fast tracked on a five month schedule from interior demolition to furnishing, opening in February 2016.

Built in the 1960’s, the curtain wall clad 10-story building features 107 guestrooms. A Moxy design feature is the curved entrance with a pink neon sign welcoming guests. A large graphic image will cover a significant portion of the building exterior. The unique elements of the brand and the design make this a groundbreaking project for the New Orleans market.

Some very interesting developments in the potential for a non-stop flight to Europe. I certainly hope the exploratory team from Air France was impressed, and we end up getting a non-stop flight to Paris.

They met up with MSY officials, GNO Inc., NOCVB, Mayor's Office, and the French Consulate for Louisiana. Definitely encouraging that the airline flew here to meet instead of our local officials flying out to meet them.

That would be great. According to this article there are already a number of French companies with a presence here and I think that would grow significantly with the addition of nonstop service: http://www.nolafrancaise.com/2014/11...n-new-orleans/

Would be interesting to get a non stop to Paris before London but it makes sense in many ways.
