March snow doesn't stick around. This mess will be cleared up in a few days even if it was untouched; At most they may have lost a few days, but they're already a month or so ahead of schedule.

Thanks for the pic, looking forward to more as the project progresses. Looks like you've got a fantastic POV for watching it grow.

At least they approved this sooner rather then later. It looks a little better then the previous multiple colours design. From my point of view anyway.

I agree that this is an improvement. The style is now somewhat more classical.

They were talking about having coloured spotlights as an alternative. Do you know if that is still under consideration???

From T&T: On Monday, council voted in favour of making the exterior a solid colour whereby programmable coloured lights can shine on it to mark special events or holidays.

I don't mind that. And I do like the new look.

Multi color LEDs are the in-thing now a days with other structures. (Empire State Building, Toronto's CN Tower, etc).

I always thought that would look great on the Aliant tower.

Dieppe City Hall has them and it does add some character to the structure.

I'm seeing on Twitter that several media outlets have access to a virtual walkthrough of the downtown centre and plaza. I look forward to seeing it if someone can gain access to it.

Event Centre Plaza Unveiled

The city has unveiled plans for a major plaza development to accompany the Downtown Events Centre. Plans include a large skating oval which would double as an outdoor concert venue along with seating and green space. The overall cost of the project is $7.2 million. That's over and above the $91.4 million budgeted for the events centre.

The video is on the Times&Transcript Website if you or someone you know has access.

Or go right to the horse's mouth and watch the video directly on YouTube.

Video Link

Here's the picture of the new plaza concept, lifted from Acadie Nouvelle:

I really like the fact that the new ice surface/plaza will be more sophisticated in appearance, and not simply an "outdoor hockey rink" as depicted in the initial rendering.

Apparently the upgraded plaza will cost an additional $7.2M over and above the cost of the events centre itself. Some of funds required will come from the public purse, but there are also plans for a fundraising effort and apparently there is already a donor out there willing to make a substantial contribution.

Also, sales of land adjacent to the events centre will also be used. Apparently there has been considerable unsolicited interest, especially for parcel "B". This parcel of land is planned to go on the market very shortly. Catherine Dallaire on ATV news tonight said the city preferred a building with retail/commercial on the ground floor and residential above.

This image shows which one is parcel "B":

For the love of God, please be at LEAST 4 stories.... and no vinyl panels... The 10 story building in the rendering adds SO MUCH to the overall landscape.

Overall, I like it. I really like the ''hanging gardens'' stretching around the plaza.

The original render showed a large public art feature (like a modern sculpture) as a focal point right at the corner of Highfield and Main. That's not included in the video but I hope they are still considering it.

I anxiously await an announcement from the Aquilini Investment Group. Any rumors floating out there about future plans Crown Plaza properties?

According to Acadie Nouvelle, total value of planned developments (of which the city is aware) within a 1-km radius of the events centre over next three years reaches $50-60 million.

With respect to parcel B, Dubé has already met with 5 or 6 potential developers; however, any development would not begin until 2018 at the earliest due to the land being required for the completion of the centre.

In terms of naming rights, at least two local firms are "extremely interested".
