The average cement truck holds about 9 yards so the pour should take about 889 truck loads. Seems like an insane amount for a slab.

Some pics of the pour: http://library.austintexas.gov/new-central-construction

They also added a street-level view and a Seaholm view. Hopefully they update these every day like the others.

i drove by this morning around 12:30 AM. It was amazing to see the site lit up and watch the trucks staged out for this big pour.

As a very active library user, this project really tickles my fancy. Utility!

Yeah, I'm looking forward to visiting it. Luckily we have a library almost right down the street from us. It's like a 5 minute bike ride. The main library will certainly be cool to see.

Some of the comments on the American-Statesman about it being a waste of money are mind numbing. Especially the comments about the library being a favorite hangout for the homeless. The reason that is is because the library is right around the corner from the county jail. Just go see Wooldridge Square Park sometime. That area is crawling with homeless because of the jail. I have a family member who works there and they say they constantly see the homeless ending up in there for a free meal. Once they get released from jail they simply hang around and don't leave. They also come to visit friends/family. With the new library moving away that's not going to be a problem for it anymore, though, the old location (whatever it becomes) will still have to deal with it. Most of the homeless people that hang around the library don't seem to bother anyone. I've never had any problems when I've gone.

The 73 story Wilshire Grand tower in Los Angeles has the record for the most continuous cement foundation pour, 21,200 cu yards. It was poured in about 20 hours.
Putting our 8000 cu yard library pour in perspective, that is enough cement to pour foundations for (324) 2000 sq ft houses, or build a two lane, cement highway, 3.041825 miles long, approximately...
Mansfield dam used 1,864,000 cu yards of cement, and Hoover dam used 4,360,000.

Looks like at least part of the library is above grade now.

I was wondering where all those people were walking to. Are there book shelves somewhere in the Labyrinth?

I remember seeing this rendering awhile back, it's been on their website since they released the final renderings. It really is going to be an impressive space. I'm looking forward to seeing it when it opens.

It Seems like you could get lost wandering around there lol.

6 Reasons to be Excited About the New Central Library

Gone are the days of the stodgy librarian shushing loud patrons. That dusty old stereotype, as well as the idea of a library as a building just filled with books, computers, and the occasional special event, has been replaced with new concepts of what a library could and should be, and Austin will have a shining example of that in 2016. The New Central Library, located at 710 W. Cesar Chavez, will replace Faulk Central Library that opened in 1979, and will feature some elements that will make this space something that Austinites can truly be excited about. Here are just a few things that make the New Central Library something to look forward to:

There is a crane on site now for the 2nd Street bridge and they have added two more cameras today focusing on Shoal Creek. I think we will be seeing something soon.

I found this powerpoint that shows the floor-by-floor layout of the new library:

http://www.austinlibrary.org/site/Do...dInterest=1381

A big portion of the space on the 3 and 4th levels is staff space. The staff is going to get a very nice area, tons of cube space near windows with views and some walled offices on level 4. I think I counted around 18 offices and 60 cubes.

There's one big event room on the ground floor. I wish there were a few smaller meeting rooms throughout the building.

The deck spans of the new 2nd Street bridge have arrived to the site and are laid out to the east of Shoal Creek.

Whoa. They knocked out all the freaking trees in like 1 day. I wonder what they did with them.
