Southwest Airlines was recently approved to fly international, and they've added non-stop flights from Austin to Cancun.

Does anyone recall why direct flights such as this was not available 20 or so years ago? I mean beyond the obvious need for demand justifying it.

Delta's JFK non stop is mostly to get passengers up to JFK in time to transfer to one of a dozen or more departures for various Europeon destinations that they fly to out of JFK. These are the old Pan American routes that Delta took over in the early 90s. Twenty years ago Austin probably would not have generated enough traffic, and Pan AM was still flying but not to Austin. When I finally moved to Austin in 1995, I don't think there was a single nonstop to any NYC airport. Times have certainly changed.

Woohoo!

Do we know where these international flights will be coming from?

I noticed about a month ago that the gate map (showing which airlines are assigned to which gates) had a slight change.

JetBlie had Gate 19, United had Gates 21 & 23, and Gate 25 was vacant. Here's the current gate map from ABIA's website

If the map is correct, United took over the formerly vacant Gate 25, but gave up Gate 21. I wonder if perhaps JetBlue might want Gate 21. It's right next to the one they use now and at the very least it would give them breathing room during irregular operations.

Red face

Lol, what I dont get is we have a couple of full size gates they can use, why build something temporary when we are going to end up having international flights in the end eventually.

There's only 1 full size gate that can be used for international flights & that's Gate 2. When you arrive at Gate 2 and come up the Jetway there are two sets of glass doors. One leads to Customs and the other leads out into the passenger concourse. If you're arriving on an international flight, the glass doors to the passenger concourse are locked, forcing you to go to customs. If you're arriving on a domestic flight, the glass doors leading out into the passenger concourse are unlocked.

At all the other gates, the Jetways lead directly out into the passenger concourse, so there's not really an easy way to ensure those passengers actually go through customs.

The vast majority of international visitors attending the race will probably enter the U.S. at one of the gateway international airports like LAX or JFK, ATL, etc and clear customs there, and then take a connecting (domestic) flight to Austin.

It's only these charter flights that we have to worry about. I don't know why they can't just use the old low cost terminal and Gate 2.

Aren't we overdue to start on the east terminal expansion? Why invest to build some crappy temp structure. Start the wing expansion now and create 2-3 international gates. And if a temp structure is needed put it up over there anyway.

Only problem with that plan is the current customs set-up can only accommodate 125 passengers an hour. To ramp up the south terminal in and of its' self will be a huge undertaking and cost a pretty dime. I think both the airport authority and the city council have been caught with their pants down. I've talked with several air op's personnel and they have been telling the airport brass for months what needs to be done to only have it fall on deaf ears. I have heard of 5 charter's already with more to come. Crazy thing is they all will want to land at the same time. Can't wait to watch the madness. One thing is for sure this will force the city and airport authority to accelerate their expansion plans.
Wait a minute. Are you saying the city might have screwed something up, again...How dare you LOL

It looks like the terminal is built on hillside. ABIA looks like a dangerous airport.
