Gay's Lion Farm

When I first saw these maps, I decided to try to ascertain if what I had found by eyesight was correct or not. So, taking the 1938 aerial image, I drew lines from the four corners of the lion farm down to Garvey Ave. Then I compared those locations with a current google map. My initial finding was that I was wrong on the McDonalds location, but I also found that your location was also not completely correct. I initially found that part of the lion farm was in the parking lot and restaurant area of Tommy's. THEN I went to historicaerials.com and did a comparison check with the 1948 map and the 1938 map. Across the street from the lion farm was a large barn. It was identical in both aerials. So, final solution is that you ARE CORRECT in the location and I was incorrect.

Hey noirishers, let's begin the new week with a mystery location.

Here's a fun snapshot that appeared on eBay over the weekend.

eBay...Charles Bickford was a motion picture actor.

The young man with the little girl on his back appears to be wearing a bathing suit. Could this be somewhere near the beach?

Wait, there's more!

Here's the writing on the back.

Get to work minions!

A very short wander from the beach.

As in the ebay picture, this aerial from 1938, shows the property guarded by a solid perimeter tree screen.

This amateur photograph isn't a mystery location but it's interesting none-the-less.

I'm not sure what's going on between 1030 and Flower. ..Anyone?

Here's a far-afield mystery challange if any of you fine sleuths would like to take me up on it.

Do you think we (you ) can pinpoint the location of this bridge by using the mileage on the sign?

Found a month or so on EBAY

Here's a closer look.

Making an educated guess that this may be on Highway 101, I looked at Google maps and figured that 8 miles north of Buellton is about where the 101 sign is here just above center and directly to the left of the Firestone Vinyard indicator. The Texas like shape outlined in red dots at the bottom is Buellton.

Google Maps

Zooming in on that 8 mile north point shows this:

I can't find anything resembling a bridge or creek or stream here or in a good ways in either direction. I'm not fully convinced that is a bridge in the old photo so . Sorry to disappoint but that's all I got.

I’ve just finished a documentary about the history of the Palisades del Rey development that Bickford, Cecil B DeMille’s brother and Mel Blanc lived in and most of which was taken over by the airport through eminent domain .

I ran a search and I could find no reference to the "Triponent House", 2949 Durand Dr. in Beachwood Canyon.....above cover photo is by Julius Shulman.

Bernard Judge designed and built the house in 1962, with help from USC architectural students he had studied with....a brief summary of the project from Wikipedia...

His “Triponent House”, a geodesic dome completed in 1962, was Judge's effort to find an economically sound solution to housing using the finest technology of the day. He called his experimental house “Triponent” for its three intrinsic elements: the envelope, utility core, and interior spaces. The envelope consisted of a 50-foot diameter geodesic dome covered with transparent Mylar, and shaded by photo-electric cells. The utility core contained the manufactured plumbing, utilities, kitchen and bathroom appliances, mechanical and electrical systems. Interior spaces were left open for the individuals using them to design for themselves accordingly.

The house was dismantled in 1977, remnants are visible....

. . .

Very interesting, riichkay. It brings up all kinds of questions.

I wonder why it was dismatled in 1977? (obviously not to build a new structure)

I wonder who owns the land? ..It's bo doubt worth a lot of money.

I'm surprised the supports are still in place.

It looks like a modern art project featuring sundials.

This afternoon I had some time to work on the mystery bridge location.

On this poorly scanned 1942 map I've circled Buellton and the area between the two red 'squares' at the bottom denotes 4 miles.

pastmaps

Soooooo I've placed the area that's about 8 miles north of Buellton in the red rectangle that upper left.

Let's take a closer look.

It's an area by 'Barham Ranch'. The road is the 101.

As you can see I've circled three possibilities for the bridge in the eBay photograph. ..My bet is on the longer bridge. (with the arrow above it) Runner up would be the middle bridge.

As a reminder / here's the old snapshot again.

hmm. . .in the distance the road appears to bend to the right. (perhaps too much of a bend for by choices on the map)

Continuing with the Buellton bridge search, I believe this 1938 aerial shows the 3 bridges e_r found on the 1942 map. I agree that the the straightness of the road in no way matches the old photo.

FrameFinder

Regarding Martin Pal's suggestion, I just figured the the mile sign would be on a main highway but again,

My impression from the shadows is that it's more or less the middle of the day, maybe about 11 (v. the shadows of the horizontal planks at the top of the uprights), and that we then are looking north-ish (v. the shadow of the post the sign is on). But how we could be looking north and have a succession of Buellton, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles is proving to be a challenge to my imagination. Could it be that the gals are cavorting on a going-north side road which is approaching the highway which, as per the sign, will lead to Buellton, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles?
