Is there a Gowanus district plan to "soften" the canal walls, which is currently mostly sheet piling, by stacking huge retaining stones or something similar that would be planted with grasses and other "natural" looking vegetation etc etc? It would go a long way in correcting the "industrial backwater" look.

The details are likely tucked into the large project presentation usualy given to the boards with the type of materials.

Yeah but it still looks like ugly sheet piling is still the primary retaining wall material.

Designed by Hamish Whitefield Architects and developed by Rabsky Group with $92 million in construction financing from G4 Capital, the 226-foot-tall structure will span 526,000 square feet and yield 298 condominium units with an average scope of 1,365 square feet, as well as 51,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space, a cellar level, a 40-foot-long rear yard, and 52 enclosed parking spaces. President Union LLC is the owner and Sky Construction is the general contractor for the project, which is alternately addressed as 395 Carroll Street and bound by Union Street to the north, Carroll Street to the south, the Gowanus Canal to the east, and Bond Street to the west.

The new rendering, above, offers greater detail on the makeup of the exterior than the preliminary illustration seen below. The building begins with a multi-story podium with a grid of arched windows, with wider openings on the ground and second floors. Above, the 17- and 22-story towers feature square industrial-style windows and several stacks of balconies with curved corners that complement the geometry of the arches at the base of the building. The structure is primarily clad in red brick except for the pinnacles of the towers, which are shown enclosed in floor-to-ceiling glass and dark metal paneling.

Both renderings illustrate an architecturally cohesive sibling standing eight stories high to the south of the development site. However, it is unclear at the moment whether this structure is part of the current phase of construction.

313-331 Bond Street’s anticipated completion date is slated for the fall of 2025, as noted on site.

New Rendering Revealed For 155 3rd Street In Gowanus, Brooklyn

The project is located at the intersection of Carroll and 3rd Streets and, directly next to the Gowanus Canal.

The exterior rendering shows the building composed of two sections: a multi-story red brick podium with double-height ground-floor windows, topped with a landscaped roof deck with an outdoor swimming pool, numerous BBQ grilling stations, and ample seating; and the main residential tower above with a tight grid of floor-to-ceiling windows and a lighter brick cladding, a pair of setbacks lined with glass railings, and a flat roof parapet with a short rectangular mechanical bulkhead. The rendering also shows a new landscaped waterfront esplanade on the eastern side of the development with trees, wooden benches, garden beds, and a dog run.

Right now, earthwork is underway with multiple piling machines and excavators positioned on the site.

The nearest subways from the property are the F and G trains at the Carroll Street station. A Whole Foods Market is also located nearby to the southeast across the Gowanus Canal.

155 3rd Street’s anticipated completion date is slated for December 2025, as noted on site.

Earthwork Begins At 164 4th Avenue In Gowanus, Brooklyn

Excavation Progresses At 380 4th Avenue In Gowanus, Brooklyn

Fifty of the units will be designated as affordable housing. McGowan Builders Inc. is the general contractor for the $78 million project, which is located between 3rd and 6th Streets.

Recent photographs show several excavators digging further below street level at the site, which was formerly occupied by a one-story taxi depot. A piling machine is also present, carrying out preliminary work for the foundations. Wooden retaining walls have been assembled around the perimeter of the plot as crews descend.

Renderings show 380 4th Avenue rising with a rectangular massing and a façade composed of modular brick walls, bronze-colored metal and EIFS panels, and floor-to-ceiling windows. The first two levels feature wide brick-clad arched openings with bronze-colored spandrels and mullions for the retail frontage and main entrance. Setbacks on the 12th and 15th floors will make way for outdoor terraces, and two small stacks of balconies are located on the upper half of the slender southwestern and northeastern elevations.
