Yes, those are the tridents, under the southern PATH hall crane. They're wrapped in protective covering, and arrived two days ago. They're in white on the RBGZ cam.

That's great news. It was stated that because of their size the Pavilion would have to be built around the tridents. They should become visible again once they are installed, bringing a little more emotional connection to the site.

Original Twin Towers Steel Tridents Return to WTC Site

Friday, September 3, 2010, by Pete

Quote:
Two big columns of steel salvaged from the south tower of the original World Trade Center have found their way back home and are now installed within the framework for the pavilion of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. In the dark of night on September 1st, workers trucked in the massive steel tridents, each weighing 52 tons and rising 70 feet when reassembled, and crews then craned them into place. These two tridents will greet visitors as they enter the glass and steel structure designed by Snøhetta that will serve as the gateway to the underground museum. Installation of the pavilion's steel frame is now in full gear, rising tall between the two memorial pools.

The singular lower portions of the tridents now reach up to just above the plaza level. Soon the upper segments, with the iconic triple prongs that created the ribbon of narrow columns wrapping around the Twin Towers, will be attached. Those pieces of steel are on site and awaiting installation, wrapped in white plastic and stored on the memorial plaza just to the east of the grove of White Swamp Oaks that were planted in the plaza a few days ago. There's no official word when the tridents will be fully visible.

Q. I am following the construction of this project and find it remarkable. So much water cascading will surely be dramatic, both the sound of falling water and the visual appearance of it. Will the falls operate year-around, day and night? How much water is required to cascade in order to give the right effect? How will they light the pools at night? In how many years will the pools be in operation? -- Victor, Scarsdale, N.Y.

A. I'm sure others who have seen the renderings of the Memorial on the Web site will agree that it will be a beautiful, contemplative public space once it is complete. Once the Memorial Plaza is open on the 10th anniversary, the waterfalls will operate 24/7, 365 days a year. Each waterfall will pour 40,000 gallons of water per minute, which could fill an Olympic-sized pool in eight minutes. Lights in the interior of the pools will illuminate the waterfalls.

Some more from the Times:

Quote:
Two ‘Trees’ Return to the World Trade Center
By DAVID W. DUNLAP

Far more colossal — and meaningful — than the 16 oak trees that were planted Aug. 28 at the World Trade Center, two of the steel “trees” that held up the original north tower have been returned to the site; this time, not as structural muscle but as memorial artifacts on a giant scale.

Also known as “tridents” because of their three-tine forklike branching, the columns were among the signature flourishes of the architect Minoru Yamasaki, who designed the original twin towers.

They were by no means universally admired in their time. Ada Louise Huxtable, who was then the architecture critic of The New York Times, said about the towers’ facades in 1973 that they “taper into the more widely-spaced columns of ‘Gothic trees’ at the lower stories, a detail that does not express structure so much as tart it up.”

What looked like a needlessly fussy feature as late as Sept. 10, 2001, was transformed the next day into a heroic sculptural proclamation of survival and resilience.
