The fascinating thing about Chungking Manions is that it has one of the most prestigious addresses in Hong Kong.

Here is the Yamen (centre of KWC, the "hole" in the middle covered with netting to prevent debris thrown from windows to completely envelope it) in 1910 (followed by a photo of what the Yamen looked like in the late 1980s).

Life inside the densest place on earth: Remembering Kowloon Walled City

Wilfred Chan, CNN
Updated 4:50 PM ET, Fri January 2, 2015

(CNN)Picture a colossal empire of little houses stacked on top of each other. Visualize them connected by staircases snaking under dangling wires, through corridors so dark even police were rumored to be afraid of them.

Now picture 33,000 people living there, within the space of one city block. That was Kowloon Walled City, once considered the densest settlement on earth.

"A huge monstrosity of buildings"

Before it was demolished twenty years ago, photographer Greg Girard spent years with collaborator Ian Lambot documenting this unique Hong Kong phenomenon, and remembers being amazed when he first saw it.

A new book on WCK has been published, authored by Girard and Lambot (Authors of "City of Darkness" which hands down is the best book on the WCK, and one of the most interesting books that I have ever laid my hands on). Gotta get my hands on this one.

Video on WCK and this book:

Still going strong, even beyond death.

I couldn't imagine utilizing Grindr around those buildings. You'd have 50 men within .01 miles.

I'd love to see a density map like that with WCK added.
