ONE 77 - 32 FLOORS - WEST END HALIFAX

WYSE TOWER - 27 FLOORS - CENTRAL DARTMOUTH

28 ELEVEN - 11 FLOORS - NORTH END HALIFAX

I'll miss the MacDonald Bridge tolls. They're being taken down this weekend after standing guard over the last 70 years making sure Darksiders pay for the honour of crossing the harbour.

There is about 130 more buildings under construction in HRM.

All photos taken by me. See my signature for my blog.

That last one is just awful. No symmetry or theme to suggest a design. Zero artistic value in it. Just a box with an awkward bite taken out of the penthouse levels

Wyse must have massive corner units otherwise it's looking like a prison.

It may be the worst one in that area. Also blank at ground level but has a commercial type appearance like it is an office building. It's on the more residential Isleville rather than Gottingen. I do like that it is a bit taller and less boxy than the others.

Lots of construction in this area but it's bland. The older houses are generally colourful and made of wood while the new buildings are monochromatic:

The foreground is a military base which has some nice historic buildings but is generally maintained in a very utilitarian way. In many developed nations I'd guess some of these buildings (like brick buildings from the 1850's, just a portion of what was there originally) would be used as museums or some kind of community space, and there would be some kind of appealing public space and landscaping.

This reminds me that adding a dormer and/or replacing a small one with one much larger is a way to add more usable space that can seamlessly blend in with the original heritage home. I've certainly been fooled.

It's going to be amazing. It's still bare bones inside, but the owner's father is a cabinet maker, and he's a general woodworker. Kitchen is going to be 14 feet long, living room almost the same. Sauna, at least a toilet on every floor except the top. Huge bedrooms with ensuites and walk-in closets. And the top floor is a loft office with a day bed. And despite the house being twice as deep as it was, they kept I'd say about half of my yard worth of lawn in the back. It won't be put on the market, the guy and his family are living in this one, but it'll be done exceptionally well for the next buyer in a generation.

Thanks for sharing those pics. Great location.

St Lawrence's North Market is just a few weeks away from opening now. It will be great to see it full of vendors and people.

At the north end of the Market Hall, a section of the historic 'porcupine drain' from the earliest market building on the site is showcased, preserved beneath a glass floor panel. This stone drainage tunnel, dating back to 1831, was uncovered during archaeological investigations. The exposed stonework, illuminated by recessed LED lighting, reveals the drain’s distinctive jagged profile, which earned it the 'porcupine' nickname. Surrounding the display, stainless steel stanchions with tensioned cables protect the drain while offering visibility.

This will be the 3rd Food Hall to open in Toronto in about 1 year if you include The Wellington Market Food Hall and The Waterworks Food Hall.

Thanks for the pics TorontoDrew.

Will it just host the Saturday market or will it also be a full time food hall? Any idea of how many vendors and what they'll be? I know the Eatons Centre rebranded a food court as a food hall (Queen's Cross) but it's still just a food court. I dunno, does it have a lot of independent eateries? I was there last year but it wasn't anything special. I wonder how long the food hall trend will last. I can see the advantage of being inside and less security concerns, reduced costs and the co-location benefits.

That porcupine drain is cool, reminds me of a water well from the 1860's in Victoria which is in the lobby of this building in Victoria facing the harbour. It had pipes that led to the docks to provide water the ships at port.

I guess a continuation of a weekend farmers and antique market and the work week a courthouse. The building is new. The market is not.

20 years after being initially proposed, United Gulf has closed off it's site in the heart of Downtown Halifax to start construction of SKYE HALIFAX.

I wonder who the "architect" was that designed that SFH just to the right of it in this shot. <Barf>

It's funny how much the context of this has changed. If I recall correctly it was originally a pair of twisting glass-clad 27-storey towers which in the 2000's was huge for Halifax. These days it's been cut down in height and it's just one of many tower developments that have happened recently or are under construction.

It will be nice to have this lot filled in though. For whatever reason that area south of Sackville St ended up full of empty lots. Skye and Meridian shrink that parking lot area down by around 1/3.

Gallery 3 shot up like a weed

The Diamond is just too easy so I'll go with the peculiarities of pre-leasing for well over a year and two towers virtually complete sitting empty since early 2024.

JAG Sound House just opened. This was an extension to the JAG Hotel on George Street West (separated from George Street by Barter's Hill/Waldegrave Street, main traffic routes. It really should have a different name than George Street). Pics via FB - last one is from an actual photographer and linked:

One block uphill and two blocks north of my last post, the heritage facade restorations have been unveiled on Dexel Developments' THE PRESS BLOCK. There are more angles on my blog. This is located between City Hall and Province House.
