It's time! The 58th Annual Zilker Holiday Tree is being installed in Austin.



Austin Energy workers attach the stars to the 58th Annual Zilker Holiday Tree in Zilker Park on Tuesday October 29, 2024. Austin Energy crew members, with the help of MasTec workers, spent the day transforming the moonlight tower into a 155-foot-tall holiday tree with thousands of red, yellow, green and blue LED light bulbs. A double star tops the display, measuring 10 feet from point to point.

The moon towers are one of the coolest pieces of Austin history. I'm glad they've been preserved so well. The tree is a great tradition

Seeing this picture from the Zilker tree allows me to reminisce in the last 20 or so years of our cities skyscraper boom.
We may not see many large projects for awhile which could end this chapter and have us awaiting the next.
As these last few projects finish up it is a fitting end to have Waterline as the final piece. We can focus on the conclusion of the tallest building in Texas. Which will complete the framework of our skyline. Allowing the city to catch its breath.
While I may not like every tower for various reasons. Looking at the skyline in its entirety, I am proud and satisfied of what has transpired.
Lets enjoy the final pieces written in the Austin sky with the eventual cliffhanger foreshadowing future chapters.

I don't think we will have to wait all that long. There are plenty of projects in the pipeline. With falling interest rates and this ridiculous election behind us, I predict there will be multiple starts in 2025.

Austin in 10 years will look completely different. People complain that they don't recognize this Austin from old Austin. Yeah that's a little true with the skyline growth and traffic. But its really pretty much the same. Once the Airport expansion, IH 35 construction, light rail, and south shore coming into play. Austin will be a new city. I really need to find a new way to get downtown for pictures though the next 10 years. I really want to stay far away from that IH35 mess the next decade.

Oh you mean South River...We have no "North Shore" nor " South Shore". Lady Bird Lake is an artificial lake on a river. No Ocean. No Natural Lake. Just South of the Texas Colorado River.

Correct. I didnt want to just say south Congress. I wanted to include everything on the south side of the river/ town lake.

Totally agree with you. Austin in the mid 2030's will be completely different

Never liked those LED lights on the Zilker tree. They have LEDs now that look like the incandescents, I wish they'd switch over to those. (yeah I know that would be $$$$)

AusTex, "Shore" is defined as the land along the edge of a sea, ocean, lake or other large body of water. I know that LBL could be argued as not being a "large" body of water. However, there are projects already planned which include the word "Shore" in them.

Additionally, there was a nice restaurant called "The Shore Line" along the river years ago. Also, the park in front of The Long Center is (was) called Auditorium Shores. Oh...there's a cool hangout called Ski Shores on Lake Austin. They briefly had a location on Barton Springs Road where Lou's (I believe) is now. The Austin Parks Foundation lists Butler Shores and Holly Shores at Town Lake Metro Parks. There are many, many references to "shore" in relation to the lower Colorado River through the area.

If one doesn't like the word "shore," may I suggest using the word "Bank." Nobody calls anything around here "North River" or "South River." They don't even cal it "River North" or "River South" (even though I kind of like these two terms). Chicago has a River North neighborhood.

Thanks Mopacs. Great shots to you as well. Love how you got the individual building heights in relation to the hill country. Those new 183/71 overpasses are really a bold color. Austin does need a look with its road ways.
