I just spent the better part of an hour trying to locate a vintage photograph of the place, or at least a photo of the intersection back in the 1940s and 50s.

I didn't find anything at all.

Before the runway at Long Beach Airport was extended, Spring and Lakewood intersected southwest of the current location. On the right below is a close-up from the 1952 aerial view showing what looks like a gas station on one corner, and larger buildings, possibly restaurants, on the other two. The current road layout was pretty much in place by the time the 1963 view was taken.

Among many other things, including the 1960 Democratic National Convention, and the 1984 Olympics, Bruce Springsteen played 35 concerts there and was the last event at the arena.

When he introduced his song "Wrecking Ball" during the last concert, he opened by saying "We gotta play this one for the old building... We're gonna miss this place, it's a great place to play rock 'n' roll." The arena closed after the last concert.

I saw a mass U.S. Citizenship ceremony there for a friend who became a citizen.

Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Football Club officially broke ground on its new stadium which will be built there and now, curiously, they want Angelenos to watch the demolition of the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena on it's live stadium cam.

Dennis Hopper, "Double Standard"

Martin Pal posted this photo about 800 pages ago, the picture isn't there any more, just the image icon, so let's revisit. It seems Hopper, like his good friend Ed Ruscha, had a thing for Standard Oil filling stations. Hopper took this picture in 1961. He's heading east on Santa Monica Blvd., crossing Doheny, with Melrose coming in on the right. The building on the Melrose/Doheny corner was Carl's Market for many years, not sure what it was in '61. The bldg adjacent to that was the Academy Award Theatre, home to a single Oscar ceremony (1949).



Hopper would have been right about here when he took the photo. The slatted vents at the rear of the Petco building match up to the earlier picture.

Here's another Hopper, also 1961, with a Standard station. Eastbound on Sunset, waiting for the signal at Crescent Heights. Villa Frascati signage visible on the left. The Standard station remains, as Chevron. Of interest is the raised median at this intersection. I'm guessing it was removed to create a dedicated left turn lane, maybe at the same time Pandora's Box was demolished and the traffic island was created.

I'll always kick myself for not going to that last Springsteen concert there.
Before demolition began they auctioned off anything that could be removed. There wasn't much interest so I got a couple of drinking fountains for $50 and a row of 11 seats for $20. I went down with a friend and it took us a couple hours to remove everything. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and nice mid century design of the seats. They cleaned up nicely and I am going to mount three of them in my game room.

Best guess this is a still from The Vin Scully Show, 1973. I would normally say circa but in this case we know the show lasted but one season as the iconic sportscaster tried branching out. Thankfully for us it didn't work out.

Seat belts were mandated for time and distance rally competitors in the SF Bay area sometime around 1960, which is when I installed my first set -- made by the Irvin Air Chute Co., founders of the Caterpillar Club. Had to go to Oakland Airport to buy them from an aviation supplier.

I recall looking on seat belts as being a bizarre curiosity and weird innovation, and how my eventual usage of them was tardy and reluctant. I also recall being a passenger in a car in which the driver flatly stated, "I won't turn on the ignition until you're strapped in." I successfully resisted the urge to reply, "And I won't see you again until you're strapped into a strait jacket."

I have a sister who thought her side of the backseat was sacrosanct, so if I wanted to lie down I had to climb up in the back window.

That is, until a family that went to our church had a car accident and their son flew from the back window to the hood of the car. (he survived, but with one less eye).

After that, if I wanted to lie down I had to assume the fetal position on my side of the backseat making sure NO part of me crossed the imaginary line drawn by
