As part of the Manhattan Project, the nuclear bomb was partly created at the of The University of Chicago's Met Lab - located under Stagg Field (their football stadium). This stadium was on UC's campus.

Fun side fact, Big Bertha, The University of Texas' bass drum, was commissioned by UC (in 1922) for their band. And, when their football program was disbanded, it was stored under their stadium's bleachers (Stagg Field). During the Manhattan Project, the drum was contaminated by radiation from experimentation.

UT bought the drum for $1 in mid-1950's - when UC decided to raze Stagg Field.

Where did you get that information? According to Moton Crockett's obituary, it came form Indiana: https://www.statesman.com/news/20191...tor-dies-at-96
Moton told me he proudly donated it, but if it only cost $1, that wasn't much of a donation, even in 1950!

When Stagg Field was razed, the drum was moved to Elkhart, Indiana (just east of South Bend). That is where Mr. Crockett took possession of the drum and brought it back to Austin. I, however, am not sure why Elkhart, Indiana was chosen as a rest stop for the drum.

The site plan for Verde Square was filed today. There is no info yet on the size of the buildings.

Verde Square rezoning OK'd; Offices, stores, hotel could rise next to Q2 Stadium

By Parimal M. Rohit – Staff Writer, Austin Business Journal
2 hours ago

Austin City Council approved Oct. 14 a rezoning request for Verde Square, an ambitious development by Karlin Real Estate LLC that would bring 386,000 square feet of offices, 33,900 square feet of retail space, 280 apartments and a 160-room hotel to a property adjacent to Q2 Stadium.

The rezoning was approved as part of Council's consent agenda and included all three readings.

Verde Square, which sits on about 6 acres of land, will now be zoned as a “gateway.” The rezoning allows Karlin and the rest of the development team to develop buildings on the site up to 308 feet in height, compared to a maximum of 180 feet under the previous zoning. Although there's no guarantee Karlin would go that high, a 308-foot building would typically be between 27 and 30 stories tall.

edit/add: looks like the site plan is in the system under the old name. Interesting, looks like there's also a site plan for 10300 Metropolitan Dr. as well (catty corner across the street). Also multifamily.

Verde Square should be under construction shortly.

I have no idea where people are going to park with all the surface lots being under construction at once.

There's this place called 'the Domain' nearby with over 10,000 parking spaces.

Looks like they are trying to add TWO buildings there with the taller being well over 300,000 sq. ft. of office. I wonder if this will go all the way to Burnet.

I hope the taller building ends up looking even half as good as it does in that render.

Of all the things I worry about in life, where ppl store their human squishers isn't one of them. Happy to see the worst urban use, surface parking, disappearing.

It'll be less important for me next year. I normally would take a bus to games but with Rona I was actually driving a fair amount to games last season.

Being down in Circle C there's just no realistic way to take transit to Austin FC matches so we always drove and parked in the industrial area to the east.

The train station opening will be great for all the people parking in that area since you can get to the stadium directly once opened.

That's what I'm looking forward to most, honestly. Being able to cross the tracks directly instead of walking through industrial backlots to get to Braker will be such a blessing

Y'all. I think the Domain infrastructure is officially broken. Yesterday I drove through during an off hour to grab a gift and was stuck in a line of cars for 30 minutes (Palm way) before being able to park. The four way stops were barely working due to idiot drivers + peds walking wherever they please. It feels like at this stage Domain needs to either just be a suburban simon mall with limited driving options or go full on "uptown" with traffic lights/better roads/street signs.

Any ideas for easing the total cluster f*ck that currently exists?
