They should have sold the land, so we could get another skyscraper, took the money and bought another run down hotel, and made it into low cost housing.
Not sure a park or what ever that is was necessary in the first place.

What was the most recent park (location and year) added to the downtown peninsula area?

Was it Jack Poole? Guess that would only be 12 years(ish) ago.

Eons ago. Almost everything nice was added downtown back from the creation of this city to the 90s, with couple more added just before the 2010 Olympics with Federal help. After that, not much added or improved, especially when it comes to public amenities.

On the other hands , there have been lots of decay over the past couple of decades though, especially at the DTES, and more recently, Granville Street, Davie Street, and most notably, the historical Chinatown. Outside downtown, neighbourhoods like Commercial/Broadway are also fast decaying.

While other suburb municipalities are adding newer and nicer public amenities such as museums, swimming pools, arenas etc. to their neighbourhoods and town centres, Vancouver is not only stalling, but also getting dilapidated.

Hence I look forward to the opening of the Smithe and Richards park, and hope they can maintain it relatively well like Emery Barnes, and not what's happening at shady Victory Square, or the pocket parks at Carrall Street/W Hastings and Jim Deva Plaza.

Yes the West End Waterfront Plan's release next year should be interesting.

Will correct this for you, if it is facadism with a stumpy tower, gtfo.

If it is a mix of interior renovations with one area being somewhat facadism with a signature tall tower, preferably a new tallest for downtown, which this location is more that perfect for, win.

But we all know Vancouver, so expect the former, not the later.

View cone height limit over the Hudson's Bay Building is about 300ft - so expect short and squat if there's a tower.

Oldest building in Vancouver's Chinatown soon to be home to Chinese Canadian Museum
...
Rennie has located his business and personal art collection there since 2004. He says the museum will be moving in at the end of the year.

“And I believe their first show next September, September of ’23, is in parallel with the hundredth anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act.”

The Chinese Canadian Museum Society received $27.5 million from the province to acquire the building, while Rennie is kicking in $7.8 million to ensure it is sustainable in its mission.

The museum is expected to open in 2023.

For the 10 years it ran before covid, it was often difficult or impossible to get a ticket for a viewing at the Rennie gallery. As his foundation paid to bring the art to Vancouver and offered it for free viewing, it was huge philanthropic venture on his part, and often showed more interesting art than VAG shows. He wasn't even in the gallery business, so he wasn't making anything from representing the artists (as other contemporary art galleries in Vancouver do). He's also putting $7.8m from his Foundation back into the new museum, so it doesn't sound like he ran off to a Caribbean island with the proceeds of the sale of the building. What have you contributed to the arts or history recently?

I was really hoping they would build a stand alone museum considering the influence of Chinese Canadian history in this city (and this country for that matter). The current Vancouver art gallery building would have also been a good contender for this museum. They could have even placed both the Chinese Canadian Museum and Museum of Vancouver in the old VAG.

Nevertheless, I am glad to see that they have placed this in Chinatown and hopefully it can help attract more people into the area.

Sounds like he's just going to store his collection and loan it out. I wonder if the new building next door is all strata?

This article says he dumped over $20 million renovating it (again not sure if that's just the Wing Sang).
