I've just gotten tired of seeing people knit their brows, pretending they're about to conjure up knowledge that clearly isn't there. "Ahhh, Winnipeg. I think I've heard of this place. Is that in the north?"

Come on now, Winnipeg is not a well known city. The idea that we're punching above our weight in terms of recognition is silly. I guarantee you more foreigners have heard of Banff, Alberta then Winnipeg, Manitoba. And Banff is 100x smaller.

We're the seventh largest city in Canada. Does anyone think they've heard of the seventh largest city in Romania? Or Turkey? Exactly... there's never any name recognition unless you're the biggest, the capital, or have some beautiful natural sight next door. Winnipeg has none of that. Doesn't mean we're not a nice spot to visit or live.

I think you folks ought to adjust your priorities. Whether Winnipeg is internationally known is a completely separate question from whether or not it's a nice place to live.

How about we aim to be a nice, small to mid-sized city, with walkable neighbourhoods, comprehensive public transportation, support for the arts, good food, social supports etc.? Let's start there. Tourism can wait.

201 Portage has a new large pedestal sign up on Portage. Doesn't really fit the design of the building to me, it's black and red. Odd. Also – several windows on the third floor facing P&M have been replaced with what kind of look like patio doors, but they're a small window size. I don't think they were there before, and looking on Google is hard to tell but seems to confirm that.

winnipeg competes with everyone as everyone competes with everyone.

we are a place to grow when u hit ur mark get out and grow or stay and build others too grow. the pesimisym is annoying.

one thing i wonder about this is peoples alergies......... my dad gets insanely cranky when he has to go to wpg cause of his alergies..(he lives in lynn lake/ wabowden) goes from chill to cranky and suffering even with alergy pills. he will get migrains and eyes get all crusty and sore when hes out in the praries. makes me wonder how many other people out there suffer like him and it adds to this wpg sucks atitude with out people relizing this fact

winnipeg is a niche city and thats fine means we can actuly do things like the bike jam........

Wow, the negativity about the Time thing is, well, not surprising given the level of underlying self-disgust that runs through this thread regularly, always disappointing. 100 places in the world this year. There will be a different 100 next year, and there was a different 100 the year before, and so on. The focus is on the Inuit gallery, which is an amazing thing in your city, a unique institution in the world. On a secondary level, it was a nod to the city’s cultural creativity. The level of self-loathing that Winnipeggers demonstrate is one of the big contributors to the city’s negative image. One thing you learn to be a success is to take a win when it offers itself and build on it, not to eat your young and wallow in self pity. If one is indeed embarrassed by the Time piece, then that says more about you as an individual than it does about the city.

I took a look at the whole Time list and it's a pretty good mix of the well known (NYC, Paris, Tokyo, Sydney) and places that are off the beaten path. Winnipeg fits in fine with places on that list that aren't necessarily top of mind like the Southern Carpathians in Romania, Santa Fe or St. Louis.

There are travellers with the time and money to go to those types of lesser-known places on a lark... they don't have to choose between the bucket list trip to Italy vs. the weekend in Winnipeg. They do both, and then some. I'm sure the Time list will reach a few readers like that.

no hes from bc origonaly grew up in lynn lake spent last 12 in wabowden looking after that mine at bucko lake / town water

It's interesting how that South Point area of The Forks went from being pretty open fields in the 60s along the lines of what you'd expect in an urban area to basically looking like old growth forest by the 2000s.

I was amazed by the lack of trees as well. Apparently that photo is 1972.

Can anyone recall what all the buildings were on Assiniboine Ave between Main and Donald? What was on the Fort Garry Place site? Some bigger buildings down by HMCS Chippawa too. And what is the big building on Main at the end of Mayfair (South Point Area).

The tall building by HMCS Chippewa was the Leslie Building and housed Guertin Brothers paints for years. There's a writeup about it here
