What a waste of money, especially in a city severely lacking affordable housing.
What bugs me most is that the City of Vancouver requires developers to spend money on public art. I have no issue with private interests choosing to fund public art, but it should not be required by government, nor should government fund it. The role of government should be to protect the rights of the people, and either funding affordable housing or forcing private developers to spend more on affordable housing helps promote the right of the people to shelter, a basic human right. Public art has very little benefit to society, but again, if private interests choose to spend money on it without being forced to by government, that’s their business.
I would be far less bothered by this if it cost $50,000 or even $100,000, rather than several million dollars.
