This rendering looks good, there's cohesiveness and continuity to the design:

But this rendering is terrible. Two separate buildings stacked on top of each other, without any coherence, commonality, or symmetry; it's a dog's breakfast of disparate parts:

No, as a whole this is not a good design.

This is not a judgement.... just reflecting>

It's interesting seeing folks reactions to design as aesthetics shift thru periods and architects wrestle with their own balance of " FORM VS FUNCTION". It is an endless debate in design.

Being a creator/designer in an industry that asks for Aesthetics AND Function can be challenging.....especially in the critical public eye where all have an opinion but few are privileged to the parameters.

From the Architect's Instagram page:
"You could make a tower a sculpture, like art. Fine. Or you treat like a place. You know, like architecture? Let it articulate its life inside."

I'm sure that will stir some emotions!

Not at all. In fact, I have been pm'ing with GB and have some insightful information he was sharing with me and gave me permission to share with this forum. But first I have to finish burying my dog who passed away this morning. Just tidying up her grave site after a short break. Stay tuned.

My first reaction to the balconies in this rendering was that it appears to me as if part of the facade has slid off the face of the building. That might sound like an insult, but actually, it reminds me of the Hill Country where you have limestone outcrops that have broken away to reveal the underlying layers and suddenly there's contrast between the rock and surrounding vegetation. I know that there has been more than a few times when people looked at buildings in Austin and wondered if the architects had the area's natural "architecture" in mind when designing the look of a building. Even if that's not the case, it's what I'm reminded of.

By the way, I like that side of the building. The contrast is really bold and attractive.

That should ring a bell for Austonian dwellers.

Blume mentioned this thing's actually 67 stories tall in a recent Instagram post...

Did it grow?

He told me that it's 67 floors, but that they're skipping the 13th floor, so essentially it's 66 floors. That would be one more than what the elevations show.

I think this was exactly the idea behind the W design according to the architects.

Thanks MichaelB. Its the 3rd one I lost in the last 5 months. She's buried next to the others in a really nice grave site in my yard. I still have seven more aging dogs to care for. I may or may not have lost her if the vets were open yesterday. She was scheduled to go in at 7 this morning, she died at 5:45am.
Sorry for the off topic guys.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I love my dogs so much. They're always around me whenever I'm home. I just love spending time with them.

Thank you Kevin and We Vs Us. They are more than just dogs, they are unconditional love.

Don't know if this is already known, but Mr. Blume shared this with me...
They are currently at 25% CD. Can someone tell me what that means please. They go before the city's Design Commission in 4 weeks, and submit for building permit by October.
I'll share a few other interesting things he discussed with me later. I'll tell ya, the way he explained things to me won me over. And for discussion on the Third + Shoal thread, he said there are things about that building he would have preferred to have been done differently, and was surprised none of us picked up on that. He said he would fill me in on what he meant later, but that leaves us the opportunity to guess what he means by that.

Good for you for picking up the civility baton on this one. And, of course, also to Blume. So much of the internet is just yelling at one another, it's cool to see a relatively mature conversational process come out of a disagreement.

25% CD would be the progress made so far on the contract/construction documents needed by the General Contractor. That would be good news.

"Four weeks" would put it at the June 25 Design Commission meeting.

25% CD's = 25% progress on construction documents. Which means the design is done and now they are doing the documents for it. However this doesn't mean there can't be changes during CD phase. Height probably won't change but materials and other things could.

So what are some of the pitfalls that could come out during that meeting and what is up for discussion? Is the Design Commission in a position to actually shoot down a design if they don't like it or limit the height?

"No" and "No." As long as the overall design is within current statutes, they cannot do much to it - as far as I remember. The commission is more of a bureaucratic formality.
