I think we are all just dismayed that Big (Dollar) Bill took a VE sledgehammer to the tower to flatten it out into a giant and rather featureless glass wall. Same thing happened in San Antonio with the Grand Hyatt downtown. (but hey, at least the glass wall is good for something - it blocks the view of the hideous Hilton behind it!)

^I think his point was that those buildings were built years before Fairmont (which really is an old company) had anything to do with those properties. Besides, only a few of those would be any good as an urban hotel. The rest are resorts that would likely be built in the Hill Country.

Explored Dell Med on my run downtown last night and got this cool view of the Fairmont in the distance. It'll be real cool once it's all finished and the spire is all lit up.

I don't mind that blank wall. I bet it will be lit up somehow. At least it has some design and texture and isn't too big.

This thing has only one interesting part and that's the curvy part on Waller Creek side. The ugly blank wall with stupid vertical lines is horrible, and the glass, well its just lots of glass all the same color with no architectural intrigue to the whole thing! So in short, It's ugly.

agreed....this building (so far) has been a massive let down.

I fear Austin will never get a big architecture marvel (something we can really be proud of)....unless prices for condos/office spaces triple (to reach the prices of the bigger more well known cities, where a big name with high design is expected).

I think I'll be happy as long as the spire has some interesting lighting. I'm most excited about how the building/hotel will influence that specific area.

I think it will be fine when completed, and hopefully cool lighting. This building makes a huge impact from 35. I think the connecting bridge will be cool also.

What's the deal with the bridge though? I mean, the building's exterior is something like 90% finished, but I don't see anything for a bridge. Is that going to be the last thing they do, or what? +

I have a feeling that whatever lighting there is will not be impressive. As much as I'd love to see awesome lighting including a changing multicolored spire, the best we can hope for is yet another white crown and maybe some simple white spotlights on the spire. I hope I'm proven wrong but something tells me that I'm not.

A lot depends on the diameter and the composition of the spire as far as lighting it spotlights. I'm expecting just a red light on the tip of the thing and maybe a spot directed at the base where its the thickest.

Actually I meant the spot lights being at the base shining on the spire but my wording was confusing. Glad you were able to explain it better and I totally agree.

Speaking of the spire, I would think it would have to be a fairly good size in circumference especially at the base for being 150 feet tall. A thin spire wouldn't be very tall. Don't know much about spires since we only have the 360 and it's spire isn't tall. If it's pretty thick at the base, they could line it with LEDs and have a pretty elabrate lighting effect.

Not sure if y'all are interested in things like this but one of my friends at the Fairmont shared this time lapse vid on her LinkedIn page . . . and it's worth watching, if only because it puts the hotel in a newish perspective (for me at least). Shows off the height, the reflectivity of the windows, its relative isolation from the rest of DT. It's a big building for where it is, and to me is kind of an obvious first foray into developing that portion of Waller Creek. The building itself may not be visionary but it's placement definitely is.

Nice video. Combination of aerial drone footage and time-lapse. Can't wait for the spire!
