With the schedule on TransLink's site, this would work:

Expo Line (9 trains/20min):
22x 6-MkI, 17x 4-MkII/III
3x 2-MkII for short-turn

Millennium Line (6 trains/20min):
24x 2-MkII

This gives a spare ratio of 12% for MkI and 10% for MkII/III

Does the amount of 'spare' fleet necessarily have to be tied to the number of each generation stock? (i.e. spare for Mark I, or for Mark II)

Cause if not, I can see this working out with the Expo Line operating at 120s and the Millennium Line at 210s, particularly if the spare ratio is tied to the amount of trains as opposed to necessarily cars, as follows:

Expo Line to King George/Production Way (2-min headways)
Mark III: 4-car x7 (28/28 cars)
Mark II: 4-car x11 (44/108 cars)
Mark I: 6-car x22 (132/144 cars)
Total usage: 204 cars, 40 trains

Millennium Line to Lafarge Lake-Douglas (3.5-min headways)
Mark II: 2-car x24 (48/108 cars)
Total usage: 48 cars, 24 trains

Expo Line to Commercial Broadway (turn-back service)
Mark II: 2-car x3 (6/108 cars)
Total usage: 6 cars, 3 trains

Remaining spare:
Mark I: 12 cars (3x 4-car trains)
Mark II: 10 cars (5x 2-car trains, or 1x 4-car and 3x 2-car)

Expo Line total usage: 40 trains, 4 spare (10%*)
Millennium Line total usage: 24 trains, 3 spare (12.5%)
All usage: 64 trains, 7 spare (11%)
*3 spare trains are 4-car Mark I consists with lower capacity than 6-car consists, but additional spare trains could be available from the M-Line

If you dial back Expo Line service so as to maintain the current setup of having some 4-car Mark I trains, you can have even more spare trains.

You need more than 40 trains to run the Expo at 2 min frequency.

For Surrey branch:
40min - Waterfront -> King George
2min - turn around at King George
40min - King George -> Waterfront

Total 82min = 27.3 trains

For Production branch:
42min - Waterfront -> Production
4min - turn around at Production
42min - Production -> Waterfront

Total 88min = 14.7 trains

So a minimum of 42 trains assuming absolutely no layover time at Waterfront and allowing inbound Surrey train to dispatch to Production and vise versa.

They already do.
The train runs past Broadway to the siding before Nanaimo Station and reverses there.

Those are the 2 or 3 "turnback" trains mentioned by dpogue.

The turnback service is morning only right?

Also, I liked the "Train2Main" days - it kinda relieved pressure off Expo Line Trains in the peak hour, in my opinion.

I belive the turnback are morning only, since they only go inbound.

They operate as a 2-car Mark II train, starting at Broadway and heading in normal service down to Waterfront. At Waterfront inbound, they are taken out of service and sent back to the pocket track by Nanaimo without making any stops. They then get slotting back into service in between Expo Line trains and pick up passengers at Broadway again.

Almost without fail, at least once a day someone stays on the train at Waterfront and gets a slightly confusing non-stop ride out to the pocket track and back to Broadway

Sometimes that is done purposely. If you were heading "back" or you just got to Waterfront (or VCC-Clark) you'd know that whatever train you get on is going to get you there regardless. So if there is only one train, and you hop on it, it goes to the pocket track and then comes back on the other side of the station, and had you waited on the platform it would have been the same train.

The first time I did that, there were two trains waiting, since one blocks the sign "eastbound". So unless you regularly get off the train at that station you would't know the orientation of of the station if you enter it from the other side.

The way I remember it is the pocket track is behind the stair case to the seabus/waterfront station (having been there three times.) So if you enter from the mall side you want to take the train to your right. If you enter from Waterfront station/Seabus, you take the train to the left. If there is only one train there, then it doesn't matter, you're not going to get left behind because there's no switches between waterfront and stadium, so the train isn't going to be left on the pocket track..

This time around the pattern is easy. 2 expos per 1 millenium.

Previous seasons, Ive seen trains be wrong railed into the platform - I get onto the train and go to the tail track guaranteeing myself and all of a sudden they roll in a train the wrong way and before I know it, im on the wrong train.

Im usually bound for Surrey so I usually have to play around for a bit at Waterfront to get on the right train. I hate sitting so I usually opt for that front space.

I hear it a lot more from people crying about trigger warnings than people who actually ask for some kind of accommodation in that regard. Despite what you may think, it's more serious of a thing than "I'm slightly bothered by something I saw on the internet".
