Chinese people are like the rest of us. The proportions are always somewhat different from group to group (racial, national, sexual, economic, etc.) but there is always a mix. There are many 'old world' superstitious types, but there are many normal-western cultured Chinese (the guy who is just like you but his family comes from a different world . . . could be Italian, Indian, Australian, whatever) who would have no trouble buying unit four, fourth floor, tower four. Now, I doubt you were being racist, but innocuous little statements/assumptions are what greases the rails.
