Good to see - 24 unit building was issued a building permit on a vacant lot at 5 N Oakley (Oakley & Madison) which is west of the United Center and near Western. Offices on first floor too so mixed use.
Excellent. I want to see more development push towards the Western Blue Line and California Green Line CTA stops. Maybe East Garfield Park will finally reach its potential by the end of the decade.

Marshall Field homes got about 10 building permits a few weeks ago totalling over $50M in renovations according to the sum of the estimated costs. If you remember, Related bought them last year or at the beginning of this year for something like $50M. They're about to sink $100M into these things.
I don't see why an X shape is bad. This could actually be really cool depending on materials.
Yeah, it actually looks pretty cool to me. It's really nice to see something different proposed for this city. Everyone bitches about not getting anything but happy brick six flats and podium highrises, but then shits on the first large midrise proposal in years.
With the right materials this building could be off the chain. With mediocre materials it will merely be a background filler building that provides a nice bump to density and some height variation in the urban fabric.
Im more bummed about the loss of the theater. Its a real piece of Chicago history. all the little interesting fine grained things that make this city interesting are slowly being erased for boring condos.

It really shocks me, though, how resistant nearby residents are to 2 extra stories. I mean, big deal. And the X shape really minimizes the shadows on the street.
And density complaints - WTF. I lived within blocks of there for 3-4 years and I didn't like that area because it felt so vacant and because of the sketchiness of the subsidized housing on Sedgwick. Having a big plop of density right there greatly enhances safety and vibrancy. It partly faces the "L" for crying out loud, so typical density-associated complaints seem really, really out of place. Honestly, it should have twice as many units anyway for that site.
^I'm saddened to lose the theater, too. That thing is old school Chicago right there.

Notice the scaffolding surrounding the flagpole. Presumably to polish it and revamp the rigging. From a contractor's perspective, this is just quite an expensive way to do it. However, I'm glad to see they're going above and beyond to reignite this beauty building.

Totally agree. Sometimes I don't get the people in Chicago who constantly bitch about "density" (I put it in quotes because there's few areas of Chicago that are truly really dense. There are many areas of moderate density).
This proposal has great density though - on that front it would be great to see it built.

The NWT is currently being transformed in to a boutique hotel operated by Grupo Habita World LLC. The hotel includes approximately 67 guestrooms located on Levels 3-12 (3,500 square feet per floor) as well as a café, lounge, and private event space on Level 2 (3,500 square feet), a diner and restaurant on Level 1 (1,500 square feet) and a basement bar and rooftop lounge (approximately 1,500 square feet each).

On another note, I'm really glad this is being done. I hope it can spur some more small, but cool boutique hotels in that general area. Chicago needs more hotels in the actual neighborhoods like Manhattan has. I have had four visitors from NYC this summer to Chicago, and every one of their favorite neighborhood has been Wicker Park. Every single one of them has said it reminds them of East Village a little bit.

You guys: see that building on the left with the metal halo? It is one of the ugliest buildings I've ever seen-- so ugly that it's kind of amazing.
Looks like the part that collapsed was just the one and two story back portions, which may have even been later additions, so chances are the rest of the structure is fine. Certainly, the building is now listed as a contributing structure in the Fulton Market Landmark District, so the owner would have to make a compelling argument to the city that the whole building is structurally unstable in order to get a demo permit.

There's another building clearly designed at the same time near Diversey and Sheffield. For a brief period in the mid 90's, nautical-themed buildings made from split faced cinder block were all the rage.
