Rogers won't get that land free and the bonus comes from all the adjacent land to build condos. A ball park takes up space from what can be condos...

Plus no Port land exists now right beside downtown, all has been claimed for development.

They Jays are stuck at Rogers Center or at least that site. Rogers bought SkyDome for a nickel when it cost almost a billion to build in adjusted dollers. Why would they dump money into a new ballpark that won't have any value later on? They know first hand its all a scam. They went in to this deal likely expecting to be forced to dump money into a renovation. This isn't news for them and they have put in ample money so far with small improvements.

Rogers Center will get a heavy duty renovation. New roofing, more glass, grass, etc. Rogers will dump cash into it and then flip the team and building a few years later to regain all its money spent.

The Jays are stuck there and they don't have a choice in the matter. It is no different then the Mets or Yankees being literally stuck in their areas because of the lack of open room in the city.

Today it isn't gonna win any awards for style but in 1974 I bet this was a good looking arena, alot more stylish than rexall place built in the same era. It was demolished in 1997

I don't know... even in 1974 it looks like a good place for a movie where David Warner and Malcolm McDowell fight over the throne of Satan.

I have heard rumours that Rogers will be spending $250 - $300 million for an extensive renovation of Rogers Centre to make it more "baseball-friendly" whatever that means. The money will also be used to give Rogers more of a "warm feeling." I'm not sure how they will deal with the sterile, cold-concrete look of the place.

Again, just a rumour I heard on another forum from a member who might be associated with Rogers Centre and had a look at the detailed renders of the renovated stadium.

If an extensive renovation happens, I would think the Blue Jays will be at Rogers Centre for the 25 - 30 years minimum.

I think you have to just keep renovating Rogers Centre for basically.. ever. No way you're going to find a better spot downtown and tearing it down and building anew might need to be a 75+ year thing like Yankee Stadium

I dont think thats a rumor. Its pretty out in the open. The jays have come out publicly acknowledging that they will need to put a couple hundred mill into the stadium.

It will be interesting to see what the renos look like when Rogers gets to them.

200-300M gets you some paint on the walls, natural grass and some new seats. 500M seems a little more reasonable for rogers centre. If you think i'm out to lunch keep in mind BC place had 560M in 2010 and RC needs about the same extent of renos if not on a wider scale.

Yes and no... BC Place underwent some fairly extensive reinforcement for Earthquake preparedness; the Skydome doesn't really need that type of work, nor do they need an entirely new roofing system. This is really an apples to orange scenario; very different situations with very different improvements done/in mind.

i guess what im referring to is that if they wanna brighten the place up and make it a more baseball friendly venue 200m. Isnt gonna cut it. The place will need an extensive make over they are going to haave to let more natural sunlight through. seamless glass to replace those horrible hotel windows. or just rip the hotel outa there. Repaint and reseat the entire seating bowl with an entirely different color scheme. That blue on blue looks cheap and washed out. The whole place looks cheap. maybe hang a scoreboard off the stationary section of roof and do something special with it instead of a big boring screen attached to that nasty hotel. Make the place look like a baseball stadium instead of the half ass configuration they have now. translucent roof panels. I cant say it enough.

better yet build a 25k temp stadium like empire field and knock RC to the ground and start over

paint on the walls is what they do every off season at Rogers Centre. They put in $10 million every off season.

200 to 300 mill would be a lot more substantial.

BC place was so expensive because they completely redid and installed a new roof. Rogers Centre would just install clear panels on the existing roof.

On a side note, what the hell is that sketchy Reno-looking casino in the third pic?

Will that be renovated, sold off, rebuilt once everything else is done? You would think they would do a state-of-the-art modern Casino once all is said and done.

That piece of crap is a living memorial to the depressed state of Canada's downtowns in the 1990s. Good riddance to it, I say.
