CANMNT Squad Named for January: Canada’s “Road to 2026” Begins with Training Camp and Match vs Guatemala
canadasoccer.com January 6 2026

North American-based player squad named for 10-day camp in California and match against Guatemala on January 17 2026.

Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team (CANMNT) has named a 20-player roster for their upcoming January preparatory camp from January 8-18 in Irvine, California. The camp will support the program’s ongoing preparations for the FIFA World Cup 26 and provide an opportunity for a group of North American-based players, who are currently out of season, to participate in training activities under the direction of MLS Canada Head Coach of the Men’s National Team Jesse Marsch and his technical staff.

Due to the January camp falling outside an official FIFA window and in recognition of both player and club needs ahead of their respective pre-seasons, the coaching staff worked closely with all clubs on squad selections. Most Europe-based players were not available due to their participation in active club competitions.

As part of the camp, Canada will play an international match against Guatemala at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, California, on January 17 at 19:00 Pacific Time. The match will be classified as a Tier 1 international fixture and therefore will count toward the FIFA Men’s World Rankings. Tickets for the Canada v Guatemala match are on sale now.

Additional details regarding remaining matches in Canada Soccer’s Road to 2026 will be announced in the coming weeks.

“We’re excited to have an extra opportunity to have a Men’s National Team camp ahead of a massive year. We have a very talented squad of North American-based players who will be hungry to prove themselves. 2026 is going to be pivotal for Canada and for this program, let’s be ready to seize the moment. Go Canada!” – Jesse Marsch, MLS Canada Head Coach of the Men’s National Team

Cavalry FC Head Coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr.
Simcoe County Rovers FC Sporting Director Doneil Henry
Atlético Ottawa Goalkeeper Coach Romuald Peiser
NVFC Norvan FC Head Coach Andrew Peat
will join the technical staff alongside Jesse Marsch, Mauro Biello, Ewan Sharp and Yianni Michelis.

Maybe a bit premature, but there is some truth to this rumour

No good news, bad news scenario here, only good news (if it happens). Also working in Jonathan Sirois' favour is former CF Montreal VP Olivier Renard is the sporting director at Anderlecht.

Good news, bad news

The bad news is Theo Bair has suffered an ankle injury and will be out for possibly two months.

The good? news is Liga MX Tigres forward Marcelo Flores scored two great goals (49,77) in his last game. He is a born and raised Canadian kid and has played for the Mexican NT.

He has been invited to the present Canadian camp but will have to sign a permanent switch to play in the game vs Guatemala.

The Mexican pundits are raving about him now and Marsch has said before this latest game that because of club commitments Flores may show up late to the camp. Will he show up? Will he make the switch?

The story continues. We knew going into it that if he was going to be at the camp he would be late. It's possible that Marsch seeing him score the goals decided to leave him with his club as they had two games coming up and it would be best for all concerned if he solidified his place at Tigres. The whole idea for the CMNT players is that they should be playing and not sitting on the bench with their club teams going into the WC.

Flores' Tigres coach said the team wanted him to make the Canadian team. It doesn't look like Mexico will put him in their roster and there is a good chance that Canada will so he will have to decide by March.

We have the March friendlies as the last time of experimenting. When we get to the June friendlies it's likely the roster will be set for the WC and there will be no changes.

Flores was definitely featured for Tigres, and was an effective player for them. From what I saw, I don't think he's going to just walk into a National Team roster spot, but the lad has talent and he will definitely make decisions interesting for Coach Marsch.

It's official. Marcelo Flores has filed his change of association (one time switch) paperwork with FIFA. He is now eligible to play for Canada.

"Friendly" vs. Guatemala ends in a 1-0 win for Les Rouges with a nice headed finish by Jacen Russell-Rowe. Lots of the younger guys getting a chance to get minutes in this one balanced with some experience in Laryea, Choiniere, Miller, and Osorio, and to be honest, for the most part, they impressed. Detractors will claim that since this is a B match, the quality of opposition wasn't overwhelming, but from a gaffer's perspective, the players you want to get a decent look at need competitive minutes regardless of what level it's at.

Good day for Canada as Ali Ahmed gets his first goal in the Championship and Tani Oluwaseyi gets his first Champions League goal. Liam Millar also scored for Championship club Hull City

Ahmed scored in his second game with Norwich City after assisting in his first and Tani gets a similar goal for Villarreal vs Ajax

Update: The Nico Sigur to Celtic rumour was false. Although Celtic were/are interested in was never close to a signing.

Cyle Larin may be on the move, fellow Eredivisie side FC Twente is a possibility. Championship side Blackburn Rovers and Konyaspor and Kayserispor in Turkey are some other destinations that have been mentioned.

Rumours of Cyle Larin to Championship side Southampton.

As a guide, the Opta Power Ranking measures league strength and we have a fair number of Canadians playing in those top leagues. Notice the quality of the Championship, a second division league.

1 English Premier League
2 Italian Serie A
3 German Bundesliga
4 Spanish La Liga
5 French Ligue 1
6 English Championship
7 Belgian Jupiler Pro League
8 Portuguese Primeira Liga
9 Brazilian Serie A
10 Danish Superligaen
11 US Major League Soccer
