I'm aware that it's rather gauche these days to speak of such sordid realities in some circles, but industrial capability still counts for something.

Civilization kinda relies on it.

The 3 major steel plants of NWI (Indiana harbor, gary works, & burns harbor) possess over HALF of the nation's blast furnace capacity to produce brand new steel from mineral ore. And the BP refinery in Whiting is the largest refinery in the nation outside of TX/LA (6th overall).

The dirtiest work of our civilization has to occur somewhere.

Unfortunately for NWI, it just doesn't require a whole lot of physical manpower anymore, thanks to radical amounts of automation over the past half century.

I second your love of Albanese Gummy Bears! Best ones made!

Thirded.

Your first time trying those gummy bears is like having your eyes open for the first time. You question the candy crap you were eating your entire life up to that point.

Yeah I get what Steely is saying about steel (hah!) and oil products, which I hear are useful for some niche products, but... he must not have had Albanese Gummy Bears.

(Also, in terms of oil refineries, I kind of like the way the one in Lemont looks better, even though it's only half the size of the one in Whiting).

Well speaking of both exurban satellites and gummy bears, I think the Hairbo factory is opening up in Kenosha just off of I-94 sometime this year. . . based upon the progress I've seen on my way to and from visiting my folks. . .

If we're talking cool refineries, I think the big one in Richmond CA takes the cake...

Not sure I would describe any of the Chicago ones as good-looking. I rarely see the Whiting one unless I'm biking through, in which case I am terrified for my life.

A couple of my friends are at Onni and worked on this building. The equally expensive PHs at The Hudson and Old Town Park are leased. Wild.

I was gonna ask what the 'market is like in Chicago for this. Apparently it exists. I believe previously the PH at Old Town Park you mention was marketed as the most expensive rental in the city when it was built.

It's kinda bizarre to me though to have such an expensive rental in 369 W Grand and Old Town Park since both are pretty 'mid tier' buildings. I'd expect it to be in something like NEMA or One Bennet maybe.

Why would it not exist here? People need to stop acting as if Chicago is magically devoid of money now. This place is about equal to a monthly payment on an $8M or so property. I know it's hard to believe but there's actually a fair number (relatively) of people in the region who could afford this.

very cool, I love to watch videos like this to stay on top of home design trends

I watched a tour on a unit at vista, which was very unimpressive for $8.5MM. honestly it was pretty much what I had expected for the units in that building. I just don't see the value there.

^ your the one coming off as insecure...anytime someone states a slightly critical opinion about Chicago you get all in a hissy fit, so what some people have higher expectations of archecture ... nobody is knocking Chicago just having discussions of what could be improved. The fact we see some aspects of design\development that we like is expressed in NYC is considered some anti-Chicago rhetoric?.. come on now

posting a silly meme to poke fun at all of the NYC-obsessed, second city sydrome people in chicago is now considered a hissy fit?

i don't have an issue with criticism of chicago.

love it, hate it, ignore it........... i do not care.

it's the constant obsession with NYC that i'm talking about.

it never ends with a certain subset of chicagons.

it's in the city's DNA and it's so fucking annoying.

CHICAGO: The capital city of Jan Brady Syndrome from the dawn of time 'til the end of time.

(holy shit! i think i just criticized Chicago. but how could that be?????)

There is also a subset of Chicagoans that get overly defensive when Chicago is somehow compared to NY in the smallest fraction...

Good to see that we've got another round of "Why doesn't Chicago build uneconomical tall things all over the place because we feel inadequate to NYC? ". Always a productive discussion.

oh of course because every building that is built in this city is exactly built to its maximum economic profitability and anything otherwise will be obviously fail and not make a profit...how dare some people on skscraperpage page forum want somewhat taller buildings with quality design...forgive us

the d*ck measuring thing is such a boring topic of conversation and always has been. isnt this why city vs city topics were banned in the first place?

there are plenty of cities on earth with huge skylines that are miserable and dispiriting places to live. there are others with enormous amounts of wealth that make daily existence untenable for your average middle class person. im much more interested in the quality of life your average resident has in any given city. shouldnt that be the barometer we hold ourselves to? whether we have the biggest collection of piles of steel or not dosent affect my day to day life. and gloating about wealth stratification/inequality is kind of a weird flex.
