I don't understand why Six Flags doesn't do anything with the eastern tip of Ste-Helen's island. Maybe they don't own it. But whoever does... WTF? It's just wasted, while it could be a wonderful spot on the river.

Wasn't there a vision/proposal for some kind of 300m landmark there a while back?

Never heard of it. Sounds like a joke though. I don't think you could build something like that on that piece of land.

As mentioned before it just wouldn't be fiscally responsible if Ottawa's government towers were anything but bland,grey and boring.
Having said that, there has been a strong push in condos going up in Ottawa these past few years.We are slowly seeing them peppered in around downtown, and for what condo towers are,they are just more asthetically pleasing to see then staring at those bloody bland government buildings.

It was a 300 meter monument not really a landmark. I think it was called Tour Montreal-Paris.

Ok, now I remember seeing that. It looks like the inspiration for the Big O Tower. But the fact remains that this piece of land should not be wasted like it is now.

They didn't build it on Ste Helene island, but integrated it to the Big O instead (the fact that they are almost identical is not a coincidence)

Not the same sort of skyline as cities farther west - but here is St. John's, Newfoundland. Taken by me.

The Basilica of St. John the Baptist is still the most prominent building in the city (though certainly not the tallest. It's not even the tallest church):

Nice St. John's photos. The intact rows of houses and still-prominent churches are quite attractive and you can't find that exact style in other regions of Canada.

Unfortunately I don't think the new office (and hotel, I think) buildings have been planned very well. Obsessions over height restrictions are often misguided -- taller but slender point towers would have looked much better. The towers would also turned out better if they were spaced out instead of clumped together.

Lighter, clearer glass would be better than darker, mirror-like glass. It is too bad that the new buildings seem to be based on old 80's designs that do not take into account modern improvements in architecture. It's like every city has to repeat the same mistakes for some reason.

Totally agree with everything you said - and you're more right than you realize: the completed buildings you can see actually are from the 80s. The new buildings are not complete enough to see yet. You can, however, see the parking garage of one of them directly below the crane.

I think we should protect the main downtown core with the colourful rowhouses... but just beyond the hill, we should build up. The main opposition to tall buildings in St. John's relates to people losing their view of the harbour. On the other side of the first hill, that doesn't matter.

And I like taller and thinner towers more as well. The ones we're building now are still pretty short and stout:
