In Seattle, "pub" meant beer-only, at least the last time I went to a pub there (mid-90s).

bars and pubs have different licenses pubs usually close earlier

seems odd seeing public house as pretentious, since in working class UK, public houses, used to epitomized rough, no frills drinking establishments, frequented by equally rough punters, with names like the Bricklayers Arms, the Railway etc. If you ordered anything other than bitter, mild or a bottle of newcastle brown ale, or malt whiskey, you were in serious danger of being branded a "yuppie" and thrown out on "yer ear'"

As noted, the short form, pub is what is used nowadays.

Yea "Pub" is what I say and seems normal to me. "public house" just sounds dumb. And I have been to the UK and I never heard the term public house just pub

Regarding the head in yaletown. I noticed that the other week looks really cool. My only problem With it though is that it seems like the perfect place where a bum will crawl inside and leave his feces and garbage.

How did they get through the glass/plexiglass to steal it? Was it smashed?

Wondering if someone has any insite into this?

heritage density to this site
(donor site 1285 West Pender
Street).

Any idea what they plan on doing with that sqftage? That's enough for 4-6 floors or office space or for a large podium. I can't envision how they plan on using this.

I would have to think they would be taking the building to the "street" with retail and office above and maybe eliminating some of the "park" beside the lobby there....

Interesting. The obvious thing would be at grade retail along the street - but that would be counter to the alternating plazas scheme along Burrrad Street and I'd expect protests over "encroaching" (at least visually) on Christ Church Cathedral.

A more interesting possibility could be a vertical expansion. I'm not realy sure, but I seem to recall that when the tower was built, Daon Development ran out of money, so the tower was shortened. I wonder if the foundations can take a taller tower? It sits in the higher buildings zone with half of the tower under a 500 ft view cone.

Otherwise, maybe it finally wants to connect to the Skytrain station with an expansive retail mall? But the underground garage would be in the way for an underground mall.

That would be a massive underground mall if it is enough for a 4 floor addition.

I would imagine they are going to try to develop the existing plaza, I would personally be shocked if they were to attempt a vertical extension, especially if it is only a 4 floor extension... seems like it would be tough to make that finacially workable.

But 4 more stories each would make the PP and B5 twins just about perfect Certainly amongst the handsomest downtown. Let me get caught up in the moment for a little bit. . .mmm.

Yeah dont get me wrong, that is absolutely what I would like to see.

From what OD said it is not impossible from a structural standpoint (this building is far before my time, I dont even have a recolection of it being built), but I just think the likely plan here is unfortunately not a height increase. That said I hope I'm wrong.

When Park Place was completed in 1984 it was built to the maximum building height allowable in the downtown core at the time - 450 ft. Park Place is a nice building albeit it has a "stubby look" and certainly could use more height but I doubt that's in the cards. Probably not even structurally/technically feasible.

According to Emporis, Park Place only occupies 35% of its building site and I'd wager that ground level retail would be the reason for the density rights transfer.
