seems odd seeing public house as pretentious, since in working class UK, public houses, used to epitomized rough, no frills drinking establishments, frequented by equally rough punters, with names like the Bricklayers Arms, the Railway etc. If you ordered anything other than bitter, mild or a bottle of newcastle brown ale, or malt whiskey, you were in serious danger of being branded a "yuppie" and thrown out on "yer ear'"
As noted, the short form, pub is what is used nowadays.
