Austin-Bergstrom adds nonstop service to Branson, Mo.
Austin Business Journal
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is adding a new nonstop flight to its daily schedule, officials said today.

The local airport hosted a press conference to announce the service this morning at 10 a.m. The new flight to Branson Airport will be the airport's 37th non-stop destination and second in that state after St. Louis.

The Branson AirExpress will be operated by ExpressJet Airlines and take off May 17. The flights will run five days a week and start at $49.

Austin-Bergstrom served 8.2 million passengers last year.
That's one route I wouldn't want to fly on (the Anita Bryant crowd).

caveat emptor

A Delta flight between Austin and Cincinnati will almost certainly be operated by Comair, which has a long history of terrible on-time performance. For example, see paragraph 2 of this story:

New parking garage at airport?
Rental car companies, cramped on one floor of existing garage, eager to double their space.

AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF

Austin airport officials, at the urging of rental car companies cramped for space, are considering building a second parking garage at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

The Austin City Council next week is expected to consider authorizing $454,000 to study the feasibility of constructing what officials envision as a four-story, 4,800-space garage just north of the existing garage on what is now surface parking Lot A.

The upside of a new garage, Smith said, would be an extra 1,800 public spaces financed entirely by increased rental car charges, as well as potentially another 2,400 spaces in about 20 years when the garage bonds are paid off and the entire garage reverts to public parking. The airport now has 11,775 public parking spaces, including 2,397 in the garage.

ABIA adding flights, JetBlue flies in bigger planes
Austin Business Journal

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport will begin bulking up flight schedules to accommodate expected spring and summer travel increases, officials said today.

Also for spring break and South by Southwest, JetBlue is flying larger jets to Austin, increasing capacity fro 100 to 150. Later this month, Southwest Airlines is adding additional nonstop flights to Los Angeles and Orlando and Alaska Airlines begins a second “Nerd Bird” flight to San Jose.

The airport predicts an influx in travel beginning this Friday and continuing through the summer. It currently flies nonstop to 38 destinations and served 8.2 million passengers last year.

Sea-Tac to ABIA is the only way to get to San Antonio from Seattle.

Keeps you from having to fly to DFW (or worse, Denver) to make a transfer. Just get a friend to drive you up to Austin!

Competition for JetBlue's Austin-JFK direct flight.

AA will definitely get some use because it will be the only first-class cabin service on the route, plus there are probably tons of AA frequent fliers living in Austin... Good for Austin-to-European destinations, too. For economy passengers, JetBlue is so much better though... and the E190's (and 320's to a lesser extent) are wayyy more comfortable and nice inside than AA's crappy MD-80s. Let's hope there is enough traffic to support them both...

Word on the street is SA is courting airlines heavily for this route. I believe its one of the biggest routes that isn't non stop from SA...I'll have to find the article to back this up. I'm sure once SA's new terminal opens, SA will be getting plenty of added flights!

Those American MD-80s seem really old and dilapidated. I used to fly them routinely to Santa Barbara in the mid 80s and they were already that way. But I loved the way those suckers accelerated down the runway and took off at such a steep angle.

Heh, yeah -- the Mad Dogs are something special in their own way. If you are in the front of the plane, the MD-80's are super smooth and quiet. But you cannot deny that the interiors on these AA planes are positively crap... I respect AA for not going into bankruptcy, don't get me wrong... but the product they put out there is sometimes so bad you have to wonder what their priority is. Certainly, it's not the customer.

Jets to get more places to park at Austin-Bergstrom
Austin American-Statesman
March 26, 2010

Quote:
A $30 million project is under way at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to create more spots for jets to park overnight near the terminal, which will speed up on-time morning departures.

The project, on land east of the eastern end of the Barbara Jordan Passenger Terminal, will add 13 spots to the 26 now available for jets to park after they make their final stop for the day.

Frontier Airlines launch Kansas City – Austin from Nov 2010

This is a return of a route once operated by Midwest Airlines, which, with Frontier, is now a wholly-owned entity by Republic Airlines. Midwest and Frontier are in the process of being merged, so this route will only operate with the F9 code once it begins in November.

JetBlue may add flights to D.C., Mexico from Austin

JetBlue may add flights to D.C., Mexico from Austin
By Brian Gaar | Friday, July 9, 2010, 12:17 PM
JetBlue is looking at adding flights from Austin to Washington, D.C., and Cancun, Mexico, according to the company’s chief executive, who was in Austin today.
CEO David Barger stopped in town as part of a visit to all of the airline’s 61 cities — meeting staff and celebrating the company’s 10th anniversary.
The Forest Hills, N.Y.-based airline will expand to 63 cities by year’s end, adding Washington, D.C., and Hartford, Conn., he said.
“At some point, we want to take a look at adding more frequency and adding more cities, as well, to Austin,” he said.
The airline is the sixth-largest carrier at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, which it has served since January 2006.
JetBlue flies to six cities from Austin: Boston; Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, Fla.; New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport; and San Francisco and Long Beach, Calif.
Its most popular flight is to New York, at three flights at day, Barger said. As part of his trip, Barger visited six cities last week in Northern California and the Pacific Northwest.
“I kid you not, in Seattle, in Portland, in places like San Jose, (people asked) ‘When are you going to add service to Austin?” he said.
The company has steadily grown in Austin — starting with four flights and about 220,000 passengers in 2006. Last year, it served more than 426,000 passengers, according to Jason Zielinski, an ABIA spokesman.
Barger said there are no concrete timetables on the possible flights to D.C. or Mexico. Part of the company’s access to Washington depends on government allowing further access into Reagan National Airport — but that could happen later in the year.
As for Mexico, the airline is having discussions about the possibility, Barger said.
“Austin-Cancun sounds pretty natural to me,” he said. “Plus, from our perspective, it’s only a two-hour flight.”
ABIA currently has a nonstop flight to D.C. available on United Airlines, Zielinski said. Cancun is a seasonal nonstop that runs from June 2 through August 7 on Sun Country Airlines, he said.

Seems that Southwest really wants Alaska out of the Austin market. Can't imagine that there is sufficient demand to support four non-stops between San Jose and Austin each day. Alaska seemed to be building up its numbers here in Austin, but I don't think it is realistic that they will be able to compete long term on the route. Southwest is clearly the dominant player at ABIA and I guess wants competition to know it will protect its status. If SW chases Alaska off this route, hopefully Alaska at least will stay and serve its hub route to Seattle. That has been a nice addition for ABIA, and opens up the entire Alaska network. Maybe frequency on that route would increase if San Jose goes away.

Don't forget about the other end of AUS-SJC. Alaska is a big player in San Jose, and the AS route is a one-stop connection for Portland, which is an Alaska hub.
