Yeah but these guys have held their property through fairly prosperous times without anything happening. There isn't just one single answer, but many. For one surface parking lots make a ton of money because they have virtually no overhead expenses. Adding fees for surface parking in the Central Business District on this type of land use could make surface parking lots less desireable financially and provide an incentive to redevelop.

I do believe that Bernalfo is hoping that if he lets his buildings get even more run down, then the City will condemn them and he will be given the green light to demo. I don't really have a problem with scraping those buildings, but do have a problem with scraping them for more surface parking or anything else that wont add something to streetscape and vibrancy of downtown.

I know for a fact that there are people within the City and County Building that look at this forum. All opinions on development are relevant and heard. They may not always be followed, but at the very least they help make better decisions.

I feel it is appropriate to challenge opinions regarding development, in regards to design, function, relation to the street, relation to transit, relation to the overall metro, but to attach someone on religion, race(although I haven't seen any of this on her luckily) or lifestyle choice has no relevant meaning on any of the above related development issues. So lets have very strong and healthy debate regarding development and how it effects the look and feel or our city but lets leave the other issues out.

I look at it like this. If I am pursuing a development project that has the potential to improve an area of the city or to create more excitement and vibrancy, why does it matter if I'm gay, straight, mormon, agnostic, black, white or anything? It doesn't.

I think that your making a judgment on who may or may not belong on this PUBLIC site is just a bit presumptuous. As a matter of fact it is a joke.

I could be wrong, but I thought Metro, upon hearing that people from the City & County Building were reading this forum, was telling them to use our city lands/space better. You know, what this forum is really about.

Maybe we've all become a little hypersensitive lately.

I didn't know how to read his USE SPACE BETTER comment at first reading either, yet I took some time to figure out what he meant by it and realized exactly what you did Zionide. He was talking to city employees, and telling them to use the space in the city (the whole purpose of this particular thread) a little better.

The opening of the new hospital wing marks a new era in patient care, the hospital’s number one priority. The expansion has allowed the hospital to become more patient-centered and helps to better serve the community with its Patient Care Pavilion, a wing with private rooms that better ensure their health and privacy, said U President Michael K. Young.

Another new addition to the hospital is a pod nursery, which helps to keep nurses closer to the mothers and their babies. Last January, the hospital was the first in Utah to become a World Health Organization- and UNICEF-certified Baby Friendly Hospital, said Elizabeth Smith, a pre-natal education coordinator. To receive the designation, the hospital staff became better educated in breastfeeding support and providing mothers with the knowledge of how to give their newborn food.

As the Intermountain West’s only academic health care system, the hospital alone provides Utah citizens with not only medical treatment, but student medical training without having to travel out of state. It is also home to teams of international research facilities to advance the well-being of the patients, said Lorris Betz, senior vice president U health sciences and CEO of U Health Care.

Retailer expo can translate into big money

As thousands roll into Salt Lake City for the outdoor retailer convention this week, Utah's economy welcomes the growing reputation for outdoor recreation and the $19 million impact officials say the 20,000 attendees make during the weeklong visit.

And as a long-term impact, Utah has benefited from several companies relocating to the state after becoming aware of it through the semiannual convention.

"It's very significant. These companies get to see Utah as a great place to recreate and have fun and a great business environment," said Jeff Edwards, president of the Economic Development Corporation of Utah. "To companies like Amer Sports, creating a site in Utah was pretty appealing. It's a lower cost place to do business; and there are so many recreational opportunities that attract potential customers and workers."

The estimated $19 million in spending by attendees can seem small in comparison to companies relocating to Utah, bringing in revenue and creating jobs....

Look, I don't post much, but I've read the forum for about five years now. In that time, the Salt Lake pages of the forum have devolved from a place for relevant discussion of development issues and construction photos, to the place that it is today where there is little in the way of constructive discussion and far too much bickering over personal and cultural issues. This is why so many of the people that used to post here don't anymore.

Sure, everybody is entitled to their opinion, but I don't come to SSP to enter a free speech zone where everybody posts whatever-the-hell they want about whatever-the-hell they're thinking. If that is what I was interested in, I'd simply read and post comments on sltrib.com and ksl.com

I come here to read about and discuss development along the Wasatch Front, and anymore, there is very little of that left in these threads.

For the past little while most of this sort of discussion has directed itself to the Irrelevant thread... it seems that in the past few pages that has started to bleed back into these threads. Why don't we just stop talking about it, or at least continue our non-development discussion in the thread that people are complaining about... the Irrelevant thread.

Do you guys think SLC and Utah will step out of the recession more quickly then the rest of the nation? If you look at it, we have only been in a recession since I THINK February where as most the nation has been in a recession for I think two years.

I was up at Hogle Zoo the other day and, as I always do when I am up in that area, noticed all the apartment buildings right on the mountain. We never think of that area when discussing SLC and buildings in SLC, but it really is an interesting little "skyline". Has anyone ever been up to that area to take pics? I'd be interested to see street level pics for sure.
