UBC's Downtown Vancouver Campus to be Transformed into International Media Centre for Games
More than 3,000 journalists from around the world will report to UBC Robson Square during the 2010 Olympics as it is transformed by the B.C. government into the International Media Centre (IMC).
The IMC will be used by the province to host unaccredited media – reporters for print, broadcast and the Internet news outlets exceeding each nation’s allotted media quota – from February 1-28, 2010. Many journalists will be producing stories that feature British Columbia’s people, culture, businesses and communities in addition to the Games.
“We are thrilled to work with the province to showcase the best that B.C. and the university have to offer,” says Jane Hutton, director of UBC Robson Square. “These journalists will bring our unique stories and perspectives to every corner of the world.”
UBC will make part of its 7,400-square-metre downtown campus available under an agreement with the province. The bookstore, which will include a VANOC ticket kiosk, will remain open during the Games.
The 2,600-square-metre IMC will be the first-ever “green-certified” in the Games’ history for its zero carbon footprint and carbon neutral emissions, according to the B.C. Olympic Secretariat. Locally sourced materials will be used to make the IMC a state-of-the-art workplace – complete with the legendary sky-lit ice skating rink now being constructed with support from GE.
The IMC’s downtown location is adjacent to GM Place, where Men’s Hockey will be played, and BC Place, where the opening and closing ceremonies will be held.
Featuring the latest broadcast and communications technology, including green screen rooms, sound proof interview and editing suites, broadband WiFi access and HD-ready facilities, the IMC will serve as a hub for a handful of key domestic and international broadcasters during the Games. Media conferences will be held several times a day to provide media with up-to-the-minute information and access to officials and athletes. Specially assigned “stand-up” locations will feature stunning backdrops of Vancouver’s metropolitan and natural beauties.
Special events, displays and celebrations will also take place to promote the province as a trade, investment and tourism destination.
