Awesome photo sequence- the detail shots are amazing.
You've got yourself a Pecco there- an SK 400, I believe. Sadly these cranes are no longer built, but many of them are still kicking ass and taking names on North American Jobsites.
Here's a diagram naming the various parts of Tower crane anatomy:

Thanks for the diagram - now I'll have the correct terms. I love the simple physics at work here, makes Statics come alive.

Cabling up the trolleys and hooks.
Mobile crane leaving - telescoped down
Extension leaves
Lunch with a view
Hard to get good signal
One hook/trolley this gives a 2/1 reduction.
both hooks and trolleys in series gives a 4/1 reduction
looking big

Great thread! Thanks so much for taking those and posting them. Those mobile cranes really are huge. One project in Austin had one removing its tower crane, and I would say it was probably about 250 feet tall. It was a monster.

That last shot in Vancouver is pretty intense, I count 12 in it alone.
Calgary has 56 up across the entire city, most on a single site is 5 currently (Centennial Place), and the Bow will have 5 eventually as well, currently two there. Bow also has the largest crane in the city, we believe its the largest luffing model that Potain makes (roughly 70k lbs max capacity). Its probably a good hundred feet above street level, and the base of it is 65 feet below the street, making it look quite impressive.

Holy shit..Vancouver looks like a Pecco breeding ground in those pics! The things are everywhere! (Weeps softly, there's nothing like that here in Halifax)
And Calgary sounds like another Tower Crane nest- Good grief!
It's always kind of sad to see a Tower crane come down. When they're up, they're such majestic things. Seeing one sitting on top of a building often reminds me of some huge bird in its nest, looking down on the city.

GREAT THREAD! Just a general question...in the cabin of a tower crane are there any sort of TV screens so the operator can see what is below the pulley carriage?
__________________ Sweet dreams are made of cheese. Who am I to diss a brie?
Generally no. The crane operator relies on their rigger for guidance, and uses a radio for communication when they can't see what's below them.
Needless to say, operators and riggers have to trust each other greatly, and some operators refuse to work when their favourite riggers are out sick!

Ho-Lee Crap!! That's a LOT of Tower cranes!
The things are breeding!!
-Weeps softly at Halifax's depleted crane population..Why can't we get something crazy like that going here!?
