Global National Moving to Ottawa

http://www.cnw.ca/en/releases/archiv.../06/c9270.html

It appears that Canwest has plans to move the Global National to a new media centre in Ottawa. Does anyone know where exactly they were planning on moving to?

Maybe the CBC building on Queen St.?

Or maybe we'll get a nice, new news media building!

Either way, this is good news that we're finally getting a national broadcast from the nation's capital. Ottawa is starting to get up there...

According to this article, it'll be close to the hill.

Kevin Newman to anchor Global National from Ottawa by Martha Worboy

Source : Ottawa Citizen

June 7, 2007
Kevin Newman will be moving to Ottawa in 2008 where he will anchor Global National, Canada's most-watched national newscast.

The show will retain its format, but will be broadcast from new, high-tech digs near Parliament Hill.

Mr. Newman considers the move evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

"We won't change the newscasts, but we'll be breaking news faster," he said in an interview.

"We'll be the only national newscast to be anchored from the capital. It's a great step."

The move allows Mr. Newman easier access to breaking news and gets him closer to chief political players and decision-makers.

Mr. Newman thinks the move is strategic. "It only makes sense for me to be closer to where the news is happening ... when you're in Vancouver, you're at a disadvantage to travel to New York or Washington. And there will be some enhancements (to the show). We'll have a new set."

The new set will be part of the multimillion-dollar project CanWest Mediaworks is building that will bring broadcast, print and online news services together into one big interactive newsroom. Since its inception in September 2001, Global National has been borrowing studio time from Global Vancouver.

Mr. Newman said the new facility will allow Global a faster platform for breaking news.

"We'll have the ability to break news online (and through other digital outlets) throughout the day, then have the more conventional newscast in the evening."

A two-time Emmy award-winning journalist, Mr. Newman recently celebrated 25 years in journalism. He has anchored Global National since its beginning in September 2001, and previously co-hosted Good Morning America (1997-1999), anchored World News This Morning (1997) and served as a correspondent for CBC and CTV.

The most-watched news anchor in Canada, Mr. Newman said he thinks the success of Global National stems from finding new viewers at an unconventional broadcast time.

"We've created our own audience for national news by broadcasting at an earlier hour."

The editorial and production team for Global National will remain in Vancouver.

Mr. Newman has lived in Ottawa three times before.

He's excited about heading outdoors for a bit of fun during the winter. "I'm looking forward to sharpening my skates for the canal," he said.

Apparently when measured on a Mon-Fri time period. I expect its early hour is a major factor as well.

I actually found out that early 2008 has already passed and Kevin Newman is already hosting from the capital. Apparently none of us watch the Global National.

Most likely they are just improving their digs at 150 Wellington where the Press Club is.

I'm assuming it is going to be national and nothing local.
