Location of the smaller tower in the development, as more things begin to come into focus...

Little Rebels of the Upper West Side

March 14, 2026
Yvonne Vávra

Quote:
No goodbyes. I knew its days were numbered, but it still startled me when I walked past 67th and Columbus the other day and saw that the ABC building was gone. The whole corner—razed, knocked down, wiped away. The future had taken a big bite out of the block between West 66th and West 67th, leaving nothing but nothing where there once was a building I can’t even picture clearly anymore. All I remember is the ABC studio on the ground floor and the posters of TV hosts with big smiles. Now the block is just staring back at me with a gaping mouth.

I have no idea how long it’s been gone. The last time I walked by, workers were already busy stripping it down and hauling its bones away. But it was still there. And now: poof.

In its place, a giant could rise. A structure so tall, Empire State Building tall, that the whole Upper West Side would shrink beneath it. What now feels big would suddenly seem tiny. Even 200 Amsterdam, which stands at 668 feet a few blocks northwest and sparked outcry for sticking out of the neighborhood’s height vibe, would look like a toddler. The building now planned would be twice as high.
Quote:
But it wouldn’t be the first time the neighborhood experienced a dizzying shift in scale.

In the late 19th century, development on the Upper West Side picked up speed, and row houses sprang up everywhere. At the same time, wealthy New Yorkers were warming to the idea of luxury apartment living, and developers couldn’t tear down small single-family homes fast enough to make way for taller, more profitable apartment buildings.
Quote:
….. Who knows how high the Upper West Side will stretch into the sky in the centuries ahead? Who knows which of today’s high-rises will one day stand like a lone wolf, sandwiched between giants? What we do know: The joy of spotting these little rebels will be just as much fun then as it is now.

Representatives of MCB7 have received a formal affordable housing proposal from Extell presenting three options for the delivery of affordable units. The options are compared using Option A (All On Site) as the baseline. The comparison highlights the trade-offs between physical location, total square footage, and the diversity of the unit mix. Here are the proposed options:

Finally, the new building permit is filed for the tallest tower, at 86 floors and 430 units. Extell currently has 4 supertall buildings moving through the DOB.

My friend showed me a rendering of this tower on Instagram. (I don’t know who the poster was.)

It looked like an actual rendering and was very nice. It had a shiny, silvery glass facade. It looked somewhat like the schematic we’ve seen but much nicer. It had a stepped back crown.

Who knows if what he showed me is the actual design. I hope that it is.

I doubt there are any real renderings out there. Extell is very secretive about these things. Of course, anybody can make a rendering.

The building will have a 54,000 sf footprint, with an enclosed 187 car parking garage.

The site also showed a rough version of Extell’s as of right proposal for 655 Madison.

I've seen that. You should know that isn't real, lol. I do believe they gave that disclaimer.

I literally just watched the video. It was a YouTube short video that basically AI’d a facade onto the massing models that we have already seen.

We get a look at the massing of the smaller, 24-story tower on 66th Street....

The design of the top from the massing looks quite nice, hopefully something interesting will come out of it.

Two of the buildings we’ve seen so far with Respect to this project look very good. Hopefully, the main tower will be great too.

BTW, the 86-story tower shows "apartments" listed on the first floor as well as the sublevels. That's probably just a classification for something residential related. We'll see. But there will be retail and a restaurant on the ground floor as well.

It may be accessory apartments for staff. Super exclusive buildings often have a floor or two of accessory apartments for purchase, usually for nannies and the like. Usually ground floor or basement.
