BTW I still hate the name "Budweiser Gardens". Has this name change generated any real income?

They paid $5 million for the first 10 years of naming rights and $6.4 million for the next 10 years. The second naming rights deal was supposed to end in 2022 but I'm not finding anything about it being renewed after that.

It was a corporately paid for name just like the original name. We could have elected to not take Labatt's money if we wanted to and council could have elected to keep the JLC name if they wanted (or named it anything else too). So in that sense, yes, it did generate income. I don't know how an arena that's barely 20 years old is our "soul", it's not like the Montreal Forum becoming the Reno Depot Centre or something lol.

Labatt is a London brewing company, from a London brewing family (as for Montreal, they also sold their soul, going from the Molson Centre to the Bell Centre...at least Bell is technically hq'd in Montreal).

Budweiser is nothing but American steer piss. I hate how Budweiser, Coors Light, etc. are listed as "domestic". They are not domestic beers, even if brewed here, any more than Sapporo is (brewed in Guelph).

I am just sad to see giant American brands taking over what little exists of Canadian champions.

I heard that too. And they will have his face on it (with that hat, naturellement).

Part of the renovation plan is to have the roof of the building resemble his backwards hat.

Puts things in context for the Bud renovation.

London's arena is about 20 years old, has some bells and whistles, and has probably had some decent upkeep over the years. Hamilton's arena is just about 40 years old, is pretty no-frills, and has barely been maintained at all.

But London's arena is also far smaller and the reason we get missed for a lot of things like major concerts and events.

Looks like EllisDon is being tapped for the work.

Budweiser Gardens no more. Say hello to "Canada Life Place"

(great news, I think, because Budweiser is terrible American Beer, even if brewed locally). At least Canada Life is Canadian.

[URL="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/so-long-bud-london-arena-is-getting-a-new-name-1.7321143"So long Bud! London arena is getting a new name[/URL]

Quote:
When it comes to the new name of London's downtown arena and entertainment centre, it's a case of "bye, bye Bud." A staff report coming to city council's corporate services committee on Monday recommends council approves a new 10-year naming rights agreement for the downtown arena, known as Budweiser Gardens since 2012. It was first named John Labatt Centre when it opened in 2002. The new naming rights deal for the arena and concert venue — affectionately nicknamed "The Bud" by Londoners — will be officially renamed Canada Life Place as of next month, pending council approval, when the existing naming rights deal expires.

The report says Budweiser will continue to have "horse-piss pouring rights" at the 9,000-seat venue.
Quote:
The name change means the home of the OHL's London Knights and a busy concert venue will shift from a U.S.-based beer behemoth to an insurance company with deep roots in London.

I actually don't mind Budweiser too much, but it would be my choice when the only alternatives were Canadian, Coors, Pabst, etc.

The new name seems kinda long- 3 words too much. I can't see an alternative if Canada Life wants to name something however. Then again John Labatt Centre is also 3 words but that stuck because it's a person? I dunno.

I still call it the JLC... just like I call Rogers Centre the SkyDome

Yes, an improvement over Budweiser for sure.

John Labatt Centre, though, was such a classy name.

Drove by the arena this morning as they were correcting their little oops on the new sign. Saw an earlier picture of the small l in "place" was upside down so that is was in line with the "p" and not "ace".
