Mild and overcast.

Took these on an old railway trestle bridge turned bike/walking path, a little west of Peterborough. It's actually part of the Trans-Canada trail.

Car was showing 19 C driving around downtown Vancouver in the sun today. Shocking as the day started out miserable and wet.

Back to double digit temps the past few days. The landscape has really changed since that Halloween cold spell

Hot spot yesterday was North Cowichan at a lovely 18.9.

Many other south coast locations were between 16 and 18.5.

Our high yesterday was 14.2, our low 7.7 at 6 am. At 9 am we're sitting at 8.1 with a forecast high of 11 under a mix of sun and cloud.

Not an option for us, as the living room does not close off from the rest of the house.

I may put up the bare tree to see what she does with it, but I think I already know the answer to that. Might just be a tree-less holiday season this year… we’ll have to see how it goes.

On the weather side of things: It’s been mild but somewhat damp these past couple of days in Halifax, after last week’s snow killed off most everything in the flowerbeds. Looks like a bit of a ‘blah’ week ahead. Ardee has been covering it well, so I don't really have anything to add.

#3 is a honey locust, the wild version of this tree is very spiky, some of the spikes are 4 or 5 inches long

#2 and #5 are both Sycamore, one is the scaly lower bark of a mature tree and one shows the smooth camouflage upper bark

#3 is a Shagbark Hickory, the dominant tree in this little Oak-Hickory forest

#5 is a Red Oak

I had read that about Honeylocust, which made me wonder. That's interesting about the Sycamore. Didn't know the bark took on that look as they get older.

Nice sunny day here today. There were some cloud spots but they burned off or something g.

hit a high of 11c with mostly overcast skies.

Hiked to the top of Knox Mountain, just above downtown and overtop of Okanagan Lake. We watched this Mule deer buck court some does, very protective of his harem as he pushed other bucks away, being that it is the start of their rutting season you could tell he only had one thing on his mind....

Was talking to a neighbour down the street and he said his full tree is the same as the bare one next door. Well, based on the bark and leaves. Could be a separate but related species but he says every year it's the same thing. That one tree sheds its leaves way before his. I looked the leaves of both and they do indeed look the same.

Yesterday, I explored Sweaburg (had always wondered what it was like: nice residential-only village for management at Toyota Woodstock?) and Ingersoll - very hilly, depressing main street but still relatively affordable. Interesting narrow residential streets and I love the postwar strawberry homes off King Solomon St in the NE corner. It kind of reminded me of Timmins.

Anyway, muddy sideroads around Cassel on the way back to KW. Leaves almost gone. Earlier yesterday, got my winter tires on: $45 @ CT.

That brown scaly bark can grow halfway up the tree while the top branches are completely smooth and white. Sycamores rival tulip trees in size, they are one of the most impressive hardwoods for sure

Summer heat breakdown for Canada 2023.

CanadaHotDays by Ian, on Flickr

72 days above 30 in Ashcroft is pretty toasty.

Freezing today. Not even 2C at my place. Breaking out the knee-length wool winter coat again.
