Appeasement does not have such a great history in modern warfare. Look no further than the European leaders giving Hitler the Sudetenland, with the promise Germany would cease to invade any other country.
Putin's main goal is to reclaim all territory lost from Russia, when the Soviet Union collapsed. This includes Ukraine, Moldova, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Georgia, and most likely the Asian republics of the old Soviet Union. Putin is not going to stop with Ukraine. A peace agreement will give him enough time to replenish his military, and attempt to invade at a later date.
