For sure there are a ton of people using trucks for work. But you go through any mall parking lot on a Saturday and look at the trucks, there's rarely a scratch in and around the bed.
I completely agree that some people purchase them just for fun which I don’t understand since they consume a lot more fuel than your typical everyday vehicle. As for the scratches and all that, a lot of people Linex their truck beds so it allows it not to get scratched. Also I know a lot of people who work in the trades that take care of their work truck so don’t expect every work truck to look banged up.
