Wider lanes mean higher speeds and fewer collisions so it'll have extra capacity even though there aren't additional lanes. And it'll be built to be expandable, just like the AFB was.
And it turns out that planning out a bridge is a long and complicated process, you can't just put shovels in the ground and build it. The planning process started years and years ago, during the Liberals' time in power. I wouldn't consider replacing an aging and dangerous bridge to be a win for either party, really, just a project that really needs to get finished.
