Speaking at a function to flag off the new tri-weekly express train 16585/16586 between Mangaluru Central and Yeshwantpur here, Mr. Kateel said he has sought a chair car train between Bengaluru and Mangaluru.

Stating that the rail network and related infrastructure in the Mangaluru region is set to witness a fast growth in the next five years, Mr. Kateel said works amounting to ₹70 crore have been taken up at Mangaluru Central.

He claimed he succeeded in getting the regional office of the Konkan Railway in Mangaluru. The MP said the Union government has spent ₹1,500 crore for improving the railway sector in Dakshina Kannada in the last five years.

Foundation stones were laid for railway platform works in Kabakaputtur and Bantwal Railway stations and for the foot overbridge at Subrahmanya Road station on the occasion. These works amounted to ₹8 crore.

MANGALURU: Mangaluru city will soon get three more express trains through extensions, including a new day-time train to Bengaluru, and Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has agreed to the proposals. Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said on Thursday that the Tirupati-Hassan train and the Mumbai-Goa Jan Shatabti Express will be extended till Mangaluru apart from the new day-time train.

The MP said the Mangaluru junction railway station will be upgraded into a world class railway station. “I have also been pursuing for an exclusive division for Mangaluru,” he added.

To another query on a world-class station at Mangaluru, the SR said it had sent proposal to the Ministry for the redevelopment of Mangaluru Central as of now. On the closure of goods shed railway yard and shifting it to Ullal, Mr. Shami said it cannot be done.

Responding to the demand for a road overbridge connecting the APMC at Puttur, Mysuru DRM Aparna Garg said the Railway was ready to do it under cost-sharing basis [total cost ₹12 crore].

The ZRUCC member noted that delaying the only available train on the shortest route between Bengaluru and Karwar was not advisable. On the other hand, he said, there is not much demand for train service between Mysuru and the coast. The requirements of Mysuru region could be catered with the introduction of slip coach service where a few coaches could be attached to a train in Mysuru towards Hassan that could be reattached to Yeshwantpur-Mangaluru Central-Yeshwantpur tri-weekly express (16585/16586).

Rail connectivity with North Karnataka is more important to us than Mysuru. Why should we tour this city just to see one boring palace? No Mangaluru MP is trying to re-introduce Mangaluru-Miraj train. These trains are important to us because we have a good workforce from North Karnataka and even student population. This will help them. It will help in boosting North Karnataka tourism as Mangaloreans can visit best tourist places like Hampi, Badami etc via train.

Electrification on Konkan railway to be completed by December next

Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) Regional Manager B B Nikam said that Konkan Railway will initiate the doubling of tracks and upgrade of 22 railway stations at a cost of Rs 4,500 crore.

Nikam told mediapersons in Udupi, on Tuesday, that the proposal was submitted to the Centre for approval and the proposal was returned for some corrections.

The mega project is part of the capacity doubling plan project. The upgrades of railway stations and doubling projects are expected to be completed by March 2020.

Mumbai trains likely to be hauled by electric locos up to Kumta by Dec.

Corporation officials said that electrification of the route between Thokur near Mangaluru and Bijur, off Kundapur (105 km), is almost completed and the line may be energised by mid-October. Similarly, electrification work between Bijur and Kumta (75 km) is also fast progressing and is likely to be completed by November this year. With this, KRCL would have a completely electrified the line of about 180 km from Thokur to Kumta and some trains may be hauled by electric locos. Southern Railway, which has jurisdiction till Thokur, is already running many trains between Mangaluru Central and Thiruvananthapuram section hauled by electric locos.

For running trains with electric locos till Kumta, KRCL needs uninterrupted power supply from Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. (KPTCL) for at least one of the traction sub-stations at Mulki, Barkur or Senapura, officials added.
