Realistically though, would VIA ever have the political will to do this? There is nothing in place to begin with, so there is no service to upgrade - it would be a brand new route. To us westerners, it seems unlikely the powers that be in the east would push for a large scale provincial railway in the west.
As others have said, I don't think waiting for VIA is the best choice. Even if they might help us in the future, we have to wait for the corridor HFR to be approved, then be built, then be successful, then wait for VIA to start pushing for Albertan HFR, then be approved etc. That'll take decades. Better we look into doing it ourselves (which at the current rate might decades too, sadly).
