I wouldn't widen streets because it would take away from the pedestrian traffic. The nice thing about downtown and the West-End, especially, is that everything is extremely walk-able. Widening the streets for cars would be a huge mistake IMO.
You are right in that there needs to be a transit solution to the west-end. I'm not sure what it would be but I would almost experiment with bus-only streets? Of course I am open to infrastructure improvements and compromises.
But first things first: let's get dense in the west!
