An interesting thing I just noticed is that residential skyscrapers virtually never have spires, at least in the US. Park Tower in Chicago seems to be the tallest one that has spires, and they are tiny ones (20 ft).
I am not saying that Vista shouldn't have spires just because so few residential or mixed-use buildings have them, but it seems to me that when it comes to such buildings, developers care much more about function than bragging rights. I think someone asked Central Park Tower's developer and/or architect why they didn't add a spire to make it the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, and they said "we don't care about being the tallest".
UPDATE: By "mixed-use buildings" I mean primarily residential buildings that also include a little bit of other uses such as hotel and retail.
