When Toronto built the northern section of the Yonge subway in the 1970s (from Eglinton to Finch) they originally planned for 6 stations in between Eglinton and Finch; at Lawrence, Glencairn, York Mills, Glen Echo, Sheppard, and Empress. However, someone calculated that downsizing the plan to 3 stations and retaining a local bus paralleling it for access from intermediate points was cheaper. So Glencairn, Glen Echo, and Empress stations were removed from the plan, but they decided to rough them in for future construction. The Empress station was eventually opened 15 years later (named North York Centre station) but the other two have never happened.
