A bit of an update on the 9,000 seat Moncton Events Centre, currently under construction in downtown Moncton.
The exterior design of the building has been muted. Gone are the multicoloured panels at the top of the building. They went over like a lead balloon during public consultations on the design. Instead of the panels, coloured spotlights will shine on the upper portion of the building during special events and festivals.
The design for the multifunction plaza in front of the arena has been finalized. This will include a large outdoor space to be used as a skating rink in the winter and as a gathering space and performance space in the summer with an outdoor stage. The skating surface will have an ice plant shared with the arena, and an adjacent building will serve as a place to rent skates and as an info booth and cafe. This plaza will add another $7.2M to the cost of the project (now nearing $120M).
