Yup. We left from Vancouver at 6:10am, spend 15 minutes at Sumas border crossing and were there at 8:50am (the place opens at 9am). So we spent 2 hours and 25 minutes driving there, meaning you can do it as a day trip.
We normally leave Vancouver around the same time to be first at Whistler lift lines with the difference that they start running at 8:30am. The road from border station onwards is a slow drive, although spectacular.
I don't know if one has to buy the $5 National Parks pass when visiting Mount Baker to ski. We bought it from the machine at the entrance to the park, but it seemed like nobody else did that. It wasn't very well described anywhere whether or not it was required.

In Canada, there is a huge incentive to keep you from getting injured because the government will have to pay for ongoing healthcare costs. In the US, it's considered government interference with private sector interests, so they don't do it.

Canada is not nearly as over-protective of its citizens as most of Europe is...
