starbucks does well in vancouver because it was one of the first cities the chain expanded into even before it expanded into other states and vancouver embraced the coffee thing before most places in canada did and is why vancouver in recent years has had a growing indie coffee scene, seems everyone and their dog is opening a roaster place these days.

people like familiarity and consistency and starbucks delivers on those and the free wifi is a big draw amongst people i know.
According to a PBS travel show Smart Travels, Starbucks started because the founders were tired of having to go to Vancouver for a great cup of coffee!!
